Exporting waypoint coordinates in correct datum

My data was collected in UTM NAD83 however when I export the file as a .txt file the waypoints are exported as Lat/Long NAD83. How do I get BaseCamp 4.2.5 to export the coordinates as UTM NAD83?

I have set the Edit>Options>Measurement>Position to UTM NAD83 and waypoints show in that datum however they are exported as Lat/Long NAD83. I need the export as UTM NAD 83.

Cheers
  • Up to version 4.2.5, BaseCamp only exports coordinates in the WGS84 datum. Regardless of how coordinates are displayed they are always stored in the WGS84 datum (on devices, in the BaseCamp database or MapSource database).

The easiest way to accomplish your task is to download MapSource. Open both applications and select all of the waypoints in BaseCamp, copy and paste directly to MapSource and proceed from there (save as a text file or recopy and paste into Excel, Word or a text editor (data will be tab delimited)).

If you don’t want to download MapSource, you can create a Direct Route from all of the waypoints. Put all of the waypoints in one list and create a route with the first two waypoints. In the lower left pane, select the remaining waypoints and drag and drop onto the route in the lower left pane. Open the route and select the Route Directions tab. If the coordinates are in a format different from that selected under Options, hit the Recalculate button. Select all the points copy and paste into Excel, Word or a text editor. The information will be copied as comma delimited. Unfortunately, BaseCamp fails to insert commas for missing fields. In Excel, the data can be converted to columns from the menu Data > Text to Columns with the Delimited option and checking Comma on the Next page. Besides being tedious, this method will not capture all of the Waypoint data fields.

Thanks, using MapSource was how I had always done this in the past. WGS84 vs NAD83 is a minor issue for me. The difference at the scale and precision of the data is relatively insignificant. Unfortunately I have a new laptop with Win* and I am unable to install MapSource. Any hints on installing MapSource on a Win8 machine?

edit - I was able to install latest download of MapSource (6.16.3) - Thanks

Further - the confusion is on the MapSource download page where it notes that a previous version of MapSource needs to be on the computer. I had tried installing an old version of MapSource from a disk that came with one of my gps units and Win8 would not allow it. A google search and I found elsewhere on the web that installing BaseCamp and then the downloaded MapSource 6.16.3 works.

Maybe a correction on the MapSource download page is needed.
  • This is a bit ridiculous. Garmin's own POI Loader needs them in Long / Lat, so the only way to do it is to manually crearte a csv file. There must surely be a fix to be able to use POI Loader???
