"Cannot calculate the Route. No roads near the destination" error

(THIS IS A RE-POST FROM ZUMOFORUMS) Hoping Falagar will see it here!

Here's the lowdown on this route... It was originally created in an older mapset, (in Mapsource) route was changed up recently in BaseCamp, all viapoints looked over (and a few had to be re-placed to be at true intersections due to mapset differences, etc...)

Downloaded to my Z660.. 4 times during this ride I got the above message (all within the first half of the ride, BTW), at that point it stops navigating the route. All I have to do is go back to custom routes, re-select the route and it picks up perfectly from wherever I am along the custom route. No real harm, but frustrating!

I looked it over in GPX Spy... nothing obvious.. Now looking at it in Notepad I do see diff. dates of WPT/RTEPs, etc.. but does anyone have an idea why this error is occuring?

Using newest mapset (on both BC and GPS-2014.3) BC ver 4.2.5 and 660 has all the latest firmware updates, etc...

Googling this error I saw a post on an ST owners forum from 2011 and he was told by Garmin rep. to reinstall the firmware...????

I've also seen this error on other routes, this isn't the only one, and if I try to recalculate the route within my GPS (that is go from my default of FASTER to SHORTER DISTANCE) it "halts" and gives the same error message and won't continue.

I'm thinking of at least doing a MASTER RESET on my GPS...

P.S. ALONG WITH THIS: Random Recalculation errors: http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=17169.new#new (GPS set to "PROMPT")

The error occurs when the unit tries to automatically (along a road/trail/etc) calculate a route to the next point but cannot. Not sure what maps you're using but it can occur when maps don't contain routing data (as all) and/or the route points are a long way from the nearest road/trail.

    Other potential causes are:

    • A "break" (error) in a road/trail routing data in the map. I've seen that.
    • Routing preferences that avoid a part of the route. For example trying to route along a road with seasonal closures while having routing preferences set to avoid those.

You can select "off road" routing in your unit but then you'll only get point-to-point (as the crow flies) routing.

    Stuart,

None of what you mentioned are the issues in this instance, (Look over the route) All points are on the road, newest mapset (2014.3) on both device and PC, no differences in routing preferences. If you look over the route you will see all is "well". (Cept' I noticed one via-point at an intersection slightly in need of being re-positioned, but nothing of any major issue, normally it would just be "flagged", and this via-point is at the end of the ride, my issues occurred early in the route, as was mentioned above)

My gut feeling is this is a bug when a route is recalculated in BaseCamp, and/or with the most recent Z660 firmware update.

    (Look over the route)

I opened your GPX file in MapSource 6.16.3 (I don't use BaseCamp for routing) and recalculated it using City Navigator North America 2014.30 (which I assume is what you mean by "2014.30") and all looked ok.

My gut feeling is this is a bug when a route is recalculated in BaseCamp, and/or with the most recent Z660 firmware update.

That is possible. Since I don't use BaseCamp or have a Zumo 660 I can't determine that one way or another.

I have no USA map so I cannot try it.
Too many via points? Make them soft by setting them to "do not alert"
Perhaps turning off recalculation on the Zumo might help.

Hardly any via-points considering the amount of turns and length of the route...

Recalculation is set to ''PROMPT'' on my GPS (Zumo 660) (which is one of the interesting secondary issues I, and others have noticed... By chance glanced down and noticed my GPS was randomly recalculating once during the route; never asked me to recalculate? (that is related to the link I have in my original post above)

Setting the "DO Not Alert" may actually be the issue??? That software change doesn't work with the Zumo 660 and perhaps is what is causing the issue... However, I look over every point and if it is listed as an "Alert" I especially re-place the via-point on a true intersection so that I don't mess with the ''do not alert'' feature. (I only place a via-point not on an intersection if for some reason I have to, to force it down a small side road, etc..)
