As shown in my screen dump I have list files with date and time format ie., 21/06/2013 7:54:44 PM. These are created when I receive data from my Garmin Rino 650. The problem I have is that I want to keep the date but strip the time and add text after it - but I can't as an error message prompts me that I can not use certain characters in this case the "/" in the DD/MM/YYYY format. My alternative is to use a military format as in 28JUN2013 as shown in the attachment. Is this a Basecamp error?
If you wish to rename them, why not do it like this:
21/06/2013 12:47:30 AM becomes 2013.06.21 Using Notepad, create the date as you want it and copy it to the clipboard (with an extra space at the end.) ~ Now it's easy to rename multiple lists quickly by entering the date part with a quick "paste" Two slow clicks highlight the entire name, control-V (to paste) and then simply key in the rest of the name (whatever you want) manually....
Decimal works as a separator. (albeit discerning from the perspective of what Windows considers "normal naming" of files) 4 digits in the year (before the month and day in that order) gives you far better sorting....
Actually, this is the "universal order"/naming convention that the Basecamp "auto-generated" list names should have been formatted (YYYY/MM/DD) because the natural sorting order is "preserved" in a folder where multiple "Receive lists" exist. (They sort properly this way.) As things are, not only does this make the lists "not sort properly" within a folder, but due to the way dates are "used" in different locals, placing the year first, month next (2 digits) , and days last (2 digits) is universally understood and eliminates confusion/ambiguity.....
Europe: dd/mm/yyyy, US: mm/dd/yyyy ~ Makes it difficult to know whether 05/06/2013 is a May or June date. (But I suspect everyone recognizes yyyy.mm.dd) :) ^^ Basecamp developers take notice! (Anytime names are "auto-generated" by software, sorting considerations should always be taken into account.)
Exactly. I have been manually archiving all my data (for many years) using dates in the YYYYMMDD configuration. They ALWAYS get sorted chronologically, and anyone can easily recognize this 'universal' format.

I had thought about doing that too. But found a better solution. (I dislike constantly editing.) So every time a list is "Received", I duplicate all the received data into another list (only fresh/newly collected GPSr data is stored on the built-in GPSr memory) for editing a "duplicate copy" before being sent back to the microSD chip. (the original data is never duplicated) Then I move the entire "receive" folder (containing all the newly recorded data) to/under an "Archive folder" folder and don't bother to edit the lists names.
Finally, every year, I create a new sub-folder using the 4 digit year as the folder's name. (and move all the "original/unedited data collected that year into that year folder) This way, not everything is sorted 100% properly, but everything is classified into yearly designated folders. INTERRUPTION........ IDEA: I MAY HAVE THE "PERFECT" SOLUTION FOR DEFAULT NAMING SORTING!!!!
YEP... A WINDOWS SETTING!!!!! Default "Receive" naming (and thus sorting) has been resolved via one simple windows setting: All you have to do is change date format for "Short Date" in Windows.... Make this change, and all data "received" will exist in a list that sorts correctly! Each NEW "Receive list" (doesn't effect the older ones) now receives a date format like this: 2013-12-22 1:58:26 PM
See/click on attachment/link here showing the Windows setting change that resolves this:
Make this change & in Basecamp: You'll never have to edit the "auto-generated Receive list format name" for sorting purposes! (Get to this screen by editing "change date time or number format." In Win-7, get to this by simply typing DATE into the start search bar. It will appear near the top of the list.)
PS: Almost can't believe that this works. I was under the impression (even based on Windows help) that this setting effects how information is displayed, not generated!
WINDOWS HELP: Change the display of dates, times, currency, and measurements You can change the format Windows uses to display dates, times, currency, and measurements. You can also change the sorting order of text to match sorting rules used in a specific country or region.
I sincerely thank you very much TRAKBAK. I made the changes, rebooted and tested and it worked perfectly. It is so refreshing to put something in a forum and receive meaningful information that either works perfectly or leads to a workable solution. MERRY Christmas to you, BABJ615 and those that view this thread. May 2014 bring you good health and happiness.....
