Well I plugged my Garmin Etrex 20 into my computer via a USB cord and the 8GB card in the GPS is still loading.It`s been 4 hours.If this is one of Garmins best software programs,something tells me that Garmin is in trouble.I happen to be one of the more patient user out there.A lot of people are going to say the heck with it and go to another Gps manufacture.I already made a vow not to buy another Garmin.
As for your interim solution I like it. ~ But why couldn't you configure the system via running batch files or the likes to automatically rename the BirdsEye directory (on the unit) when the unit is first detected and then run Basecamp? (And subsequently create/run a second batch file to rename it back after Basecamp is closed?)
Real device (GPX file(s) containing waypoints/tracks/etc) --> Hard drive --> MS/BC
Now both MS/BC can read "usage data" from your real device and phone it home to Garmin. The clone method defeats that (those files aren't on my clones) :)
Yes, 10GB of Birdseye will cause very slow startup times on the GPS. I have a 16GB class 10 card with over 14GB of Birdseye. I stopped using it on my Montana because startup would take forever. This is especially annoying when using City Navigator in the car and something causes the Montana to crash. By the time it completes a reboot you have already missed the turn you were supposed to make. ;)
I only put what I really need on the GPS now. Most of the time, the card slot is just empty and I run with everything in internal memory.
