POI Along Route

I am planning some routes in BaseCamp 4.2.4 using waypoints for the start and finish points and then using the Insert tool to tailor the route to where I want to go. After a bad start with BC, it seems to be improving with each release (or I'm getting better) although I'm struggling with the Find function.

Does anyone know if it is possible to identify Fuel POI's along a route?

I'm currently panning along the route and then finding Fuel POI's which I review to see if they are on my direct route. I'm then dragging these into a List which is in the route folder.

It means that I can select fuel stations on my route rather than a radius around my current position. I've contemplated putting them in as shaping points.

Having the functionality to find POI's along a route would reduce the manual process that I'm using at the moment.

My motorbike does about 100 miles on a tank so I like to know where the next fuel station is!
  • You can't AFAIK do exactly what you want, but if you select the route so that it all shows on the map, then do a search for Fuel POIs you may find that easier?

I don't know where you are but if in the US I wouldn't trust Gas Station POI's in rural area if I was you. In my experience many go out of business or move. A few times I've almost been out of gas because of this and my current car has a 400 mile range. These days I use the "fill up if the gauge says 1/4 or less" rule when near a gas station.

    My 2c.

Thanks for that. That is basically what I had been doing. I started at the beginning of the route, found fuel stations at the beginning, then I used the Measure function to measure 50 miles give or take along the route, repositioned the map and then hit CTRL R to refresh the search.

The search finds the 50 that are closest to the centre position on the map. If you have a city north and south of an east to west route, the search will find 50 in the cities either side but not necessarily along the route.

I think being able to find POI's along a route would be quite a useful piece of functionality. It could be restricted to 50 points.

I'm in the UK but planning a trip through the Pyrenees.

Once I've found the fuel station I use the Street View function in Google Maps to check if there is actually a fuel station there. I appreciate Street View is not up to date but it works quite well.

Previous units, e.g. 276C, had that functionality. Garmin, for its own inscrutable reasons, chose to not implement that functionality on the newer devices.
  • You can still do it along a route on some of the nuvis themselves, but the OP is trying to do it in Basecamp.

It doesn't look like you've given the Trip Planner a shot at this. I know that the "Search along route" function is not the same as the old "Search along Active Route" but it is a bit faster than your current process maybe(?).

Yes, BaseCamp Trip Planner does have search along route functionality.

http://garminbasecamp.wikispaces.com/Trip+Planner#x-Add%20Via%20Point shows how to do it.
