Locating a Zip Code--How to do it?

Hi all,
Is there anyway in Basecamp to 'find' a zip code, ie search for a zip code?

Not sure if BaseCamp will do it but this site will :D

  • In Basecamp-how do to locate all Post Offices with a City/area?

Thanks for the advice, but that is not what I want to do. I want to look up zip codes within the data base and not an external link. I want to use the search results for planning visiting various zip codes.

Another question, Using MapSource I was able to 'Find' a City/State and then search for all POI's with the words Post Office in the title, ie a listing of all PO within the area. How do you do that using basecamp?
  • With Basecamp 4.2.4 I can just enter a zip code in the search box in the upper right an click on the search icon. BC will grind around a bit and eventually pan the map over to the zip code area. I'm guessing it's just using its' POI list as I also get a list of random points within a few tenths of a mile from the zip area. So, it does work if all you want is to get in the general vicinity of a zip code.

BTW the new reCaptcha scheme sucks. I've tried about 12 times so far without success. One more and I'm done.

Agreed. They're now harder to read. I have to try about 4 to 5 times until I fluke it.

THANKS. It doesn't seem as inclusive as MapSource. I sure wish Garmin would 'add' features versus taking them away. It all started with removing the 'mark' feature on the StreetPilot's after the 2610 model and removing the sequential feature of the marked location(s).
As you can tell, I am just getting started with Basecamp after being a MapSource person.
    Thanks again,
    Robert

I actually like Basecamp, and I'm very critical of software!

DISCLAIMER: I've been using Basecamp since v.2. (I never used Mapsource.) I also use Basecamp for "On the Trail" (in the woods actually) scenarios.

I have to say that once you really get into this tool, it "grows on you" (especially for "on the trail" usage!) For several years, I've looked for something better. During the time, this product has GROWN! Truth is, I haven't found anything that even comes close in terms of GPSr integration. The only mapping software I have yet to evaluate is Fugawi.

IMO, Basecamp's weakness is product sync with unit, directory location awareness of GPSr's, OLD BIRDSEYE IMAGERY, and an inability to hide/show folders (with sub-folders) and/or individual "lists" on the map. Sure, there are also "a few bugs", and a few "omissions", but this is a very complicated piece of software. (And I know firsthand that the developers are actively working on these.) ~ A customizable toolbar would be nice too. Some features are buried in the menu's, well hidden from the user!

Another thing is that there are some developers (who spend time in this forum) who really do both care about and use the product themselves. That in itself is very reassuring.
(Wish the firmware guys at Garmin shared the passion, but they don't seem to understand some of the "basics" that users want & really need.)

Well, I'm glad it's working out so well for you. Since BaseCamp was designed for off-road (hiking, biking, snowmobiling, whatever) use, it appears to be right down (or up) your alley, especially if you've never gotten used to MapSource. Ignorance is bliss (no offense meant).

For those of us who were perfectly happy with MS and work primarily with road-based devices (mostly Nuvis these days), it's been a tough slog.

That said, I've still been able to make it work, though I did have to try twice to get a Nuvi that was half as good as the older devices I've had that worked so will with MS.

BC is a perfect example of something made by a committee that's entirely different from what it was originally intended to be.
