Hi guys, Im trying to combine a routes. First part of my route is a driving route and then it enters parking lot which does not have any roads. I want to draw a path across that lot and join it to the road on the other end of parking lot. When I try to do that basecamp reroutes me around the parking lot and I don't want that. What can I do to have the route go across the parking lot?

Thanks

Convert driving route to a track (in Basecamp this feature is either in the alt menu, or in the menu at top of screen, can't remember which). Then create another track and combine the tracks. (you loose routing this way)
Another option is to change routing (for the entire route) to direct routing. (Here again, you loose routing.)
Another option is to not combine the routes. Instead, assign the parking lot crossing section to direct routing. (and use two separate routes)

Last option (which may in fact be exactly what you are looking for) is here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?21640-POIs-Waypoints-Via-Points-Shaping-Points-101/page2
(I can't help you with this, as I don't spend much time working with routes. ~ I mostly use waypoints and tracks in the woods. But I had remembered this recent thread about how and when & how to use "shaping points" as opposed to using "via points.")

Recent versions of Basecamp allow you to specify a different profile for each leg of a route. In the route properties box you can double click on a way point and the option to Edit Via Point is offered. There is also a drop down box which allows you to assign a different profile to this leg. In your case, this would be "Direct".

Place one way point where the route leaves the routable road and another where it rejoins a routable road. The leg between these waypoints can now be set to the Direct profile.
  • Well that's true but whether that will remain 'direct' when it's transferred to the nuvi (?) is in doubt. As the OP didn't mention what GPS he wants to use this route on I can't say for sure, but AFAIK no nuvi will retain a 'direct route' sent by Basecamp.

At least you should set the recalculation mode off.

Is anyone seeing a crash with converting tracks to routes or vice versa?

just tried it, but no crash.
    I'm using BC 4.2.4
I've converted a track to a route, than converted it back again.
made a new route (only 2 points), converted it to a track and back to a route, no problem.

Hey guys, I have tired many things selecting points on a routes and converting them to direct route does not work because you have to recalculate the route. Any other suggestions? Is it possible to update the map on garmin like add a street to it?

    Thanks
  • No you can't add a street.

I think all you can do is something similar to what I did on a recent trip to France where my nuvi refused to take me onto a newly built bypass road, even though it had the road shown. I suspect there was a map error, so set a waypoint just before named 'Turn right at next junction'. Having made the turn the nuvi then recalculated the route.

You could insert a waypoint just before the parking lot named 'Go straight on', having done so and rejoined the route the other side of the parking lot your GPS will continue the way you want.

The Mixed-Travel Routing process does not work well in Windows-BaseCamp. The alternative method is to just switch to a non-routable map that shows the feature you want to route (Direct) through while you are in route-edit mode and then change the map back to routable where you want to start back along-road routing. Your transition point back to Routable must be on a routable road or the entire route will recalculate. And, you cannot edit this route or it will recalculate.

What part of the process is not working? Or working differently than the Mac version?
