Waypoints and routes

I have a Garmin GPmap62st.

When I download compiled routes from the web, I notice (1) the waypoints start with 01, 02 etc, and (2) they seem to be internal to the route, that is, they are not listed separately on my GPS, and when I am no longer navigating a particular route, they are no longer individually available on my device. This makes it possible to have many routes all numbered from 01 upwards.

In any route I compile, as well as forming part of a route, the waypoints are listed as individual waypoints. If I attempt to delete an existing set of waypoints to make way for a new set also beginning with 01, these waypoints disappear from the route they were part of.

How can I compile routes with characteristics (1) and (2) above on Basecamp?

You've lost me I'm afraid, maybe someone else will understand what you're asking or if not perhaps you could explain what you want to achieve?

1. I have some waypoints on my 62st that have been given the numbers, say, 074 - 092 by the device.
2. I want to compile a route using these waypoints but renumbering the waypoints 01, 02 etc.
3. I then want to delete the waypoints 074 - 092 from my device leaving the route I have compiled with waypoints 01, 02 etc intact.

OK. Copy the waypoints from your GPS into Basecamp. Delete them from your GPS. Rename the waypoints, then create the route in Basecamp. Send the route and waypoints to your GPS.
