I downloaded Basecamp on my Windows 7 computer. I created a short route. I clicked to send it to my device (Nuvi 40 LM). It appeared to download. When I went to the device, it wasn't there. What am I doing wrong?
but I think you're asking the wrong question. What functionality do you want and how much are you prepared to pay for it? For example the ability to save and transfer routes is usually only found in the more expensive nuvi models.

Depending on where you live (U.S. vs. UK/Europe), the Nuvi 1490 may still available and offers the best functionality of any Nuvi for those who are used to doing routes rather than the bizarre "trip" approach of the newer Nuvis. I can't remember what I paid for mine (through Amazon), but it was well under $200 & came with lifetime map updates.
I wouldn't worry too much about the newer nuvis and 'trip planner'. I kept my 1490 for a while, preferring 'route planner' to 'trip planner' but now have a 2508 that uses 'trip planner' and am very happy with it. Most of the early problems with trip planner have been resolved, and one bonus (probably important for m'cyclists) is that the 2013 nuvis accept shaping/do not alert points from Basecamp, earlier nuvis do not.
Due to the volume of devices developed by Garmin and the varying capabilities of these devices, your level of compatibility with BaseCamp will vary. Some devices support routes being sent from BaseCamp, some do not. However BaseCamp has it's uses when dealing with devices that don't have support for recalculated routes. It is still easier to search for waypoints and destinations on BaseCamp and then move them to the device then it would be on the device itself. Also, if you create the routes in BaseCamp you can get a reasonable approximation of your travel plans using the maps on the device, and in the future should you purchase a device that supports BaseCamp's routes, you will have them available. BaseCamp is a product with many features and options but these are limited by the capability of the device. If the device will not read them, then BaseCamp can do little to support that.
All or most devices are "compatible" with BaseCamp but your device may not support all of BaseCamp's features.

Now I see quite many devices supporting 1000 points/100 routes. And their specs also say trip planner supported. When it says trip planner supported, I presume, its an on device trip planner.
- So in case if one wants a to do trip-planning on PC/MAC in Basecamp, will these devices support transfer of trip from Basecamp running on a Computer (PC/MAC)?
- If yes what exactly transfer of a trip means?
- As per my understanding, since trip is also a collection of routes and waypoints, I hope they should support transfer of routes too.
Please correct if that understanding is not right.
Based on the above thought process I was planning to buy one of the Nuvi 24xx or a 25XX series device.
