Odd straight lines

I suspect you don't have a suitable routeable map selected. Go to View, Toolbars, Map products, so that the map drop down list appears in the tool bar. What maps do you see?

It comes up with Trip and Waypoint Manager v2.
The other option is Global Map.

I believe it is caused by you turning off you gps. When you turn it back on, there will be a straight line for the "track" between the point what the GPS was off and when it was turned on again. Open one of the straight line track and see it there are any points on the track.

Ok guys, we are getting somewhere here. Some of the 'routes' are recalculating correctly; others are staying with the straight lines. Recalculate seems to only work in routes.
Re the points on the straight lines, there is a way point at one end of each and a black dot at the other end.
Hope this makes sense.

You can't recalculate a track. If the routes now work that's as good as it gets.

Garmin supports two types of routes Direct and Automated. Any Activity Profile (Driving, Walking etc.) other than Direct is an Automated route. Automated Routes require a map with routable features (roads, trails etc).

Devices have different limits for the number of user points allowed. On miy device an Automated Route is limited to 50 user points and a Direct Route to something like 250 user points.

When a track is converted to a route, it will initially be converted to a Direct Route with the loss of some track points depending on how the conversion was done.

Automated Routes take the user points (those seen on the Properties tab when double click on a route) and connect them following routable features. If a user point does not fall on a routable feature, the calculated route will find the nearest point along a routable feature and connect to the user point and back in a straight line.

Your image looks like you took a track, converted it to a Direct Route and then to an Automated Route (Walking). The flags are user points and most did not not fall on a routable feature. If you change the Activity profile to Direct, you will see point to point connections between your flags. If you actually followed a road, you may want to build an Automated Route using your displayed route converted back to a Direct Route as a guide. You can also convert the Direct Route back to a track, but it will contain fewer points then your original track.

It will take a little time to digest all the various route/track info. Most of my 'tracks' are completely off-road on open hillside.

If that is the case, you can either navigate the track (chances are your device will do this) or convert the track to a Direct Route with the maximum number of points your device will handle for a Direct Route. If you choose to make a route, do not change the Activity Profile from Direct. Recalculation is not an option for a Direct Route.

Pretty sure that the Colorado cannot do that. I think advanced track navigation wasn't introduced until the Oregon 450 series, a number of years after the Colorado came out.
