Problem Creating A New Trip on BaseCamp

Hello,

I just bought a new Garmin Fenix and installed BaseCamp to my computer (English language Windows 7). I tried to plan a new trip by clicking on Trip Planner > New Trip but a message popped up, saying:

"The Trip Planner is not compatible with the current map. Please choose another map to use the Trip Planner."

I am in Japan and the map is the default map on BaseCamp. I have not added anything nor made any changes. Where can I get another map (for free hopefully)?

Can someone please help? I just want to add coordinates on BaseCamp so that I can transfer them to my watch.

Thank you.
  • Well you could load an OSM map but that's not likely to be compatible with trip planner either.

You don't need to use trip planner though. Use the route tool, that will work with the basemap and OSM maps, but note that the Basecamp basemap isn't very accurate or detailed.

Just trying it now, the trip planner seems to work fine with the (routable) OSM maps I have installed, including in walking or cycling modes.
I presume the trip planner requires routable maps, which is why it won't work with the basemap.

Though I'd agree, simplest just to use the route tool. The trip planner is for planning multiday trips, visiting several places of interest and creating a schedule etc.
  • Agreed, if it's a routeable OSM map it'll work.
  • You can't install a .img file into Basecamp, however if you put in onto a USB stick or card Basecamp will read it off there. Create a Garmin folder on the card/stick and all should be well. If Basecamp still can't see it use Device Manager from here to make the map visible http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

No, you can't get a exactly map the same as on the website. Its a rather different format to the maps used in BaseCamp (bitmap vs vector etc).
For the "Generic Routable" map, I recommend you choose the option for "Include a TYP file", and pick the option for Mapnik. This makes the map look much nicer in BaseCamp, more similar to the map on the website. Or try the "Generic Routable (testing new style)".

Not sure about languages, what languages do you want, and what languages does the map have?
I think those maps usually have names in the local language. So in Japan, it would be in Japanese. Though they may include English translations for some countries.

You could try some of the other OSM maps listed here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download
Or ask on the OSM forum: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewforum.php?id=26

    Don't even bother with Basecamp.

Use mapquest, save it to "new trip" and rename it. Then click on the send tab top right and SEND TO my Garmin GPS. Pluck it in first. Your trip can be found on your Garmin under Apps (Nuvi 3590), in Trip Planner. I had to break my trip into two trips, there, and back because Garmin GPS's are incapable of saving long routes or trips. No one seems to know if it is because of the amount of stops or the amount of miles that causes it not to show up on the GPS itself. This is a something that Garmin clearly needs to work on while they are firing the person who created Base Camp.

It's neither, but a combination of the 2 plus the complexity of the route, eg number of turns. There is only so much processing power in any GPS :)
