I have previously copied default databases between laptop and desktop to keep them synchronized.
This time I thought I would use the facility of the separate user database.
Both systems are windows 7 pro, x64.
The first thing I did was make sure both systems were updated to V4.2.3 and made backups.
Then the fun started:
Issue 1:
The user interface option to create a new database does not warn you if you select an existing folder - I foolishly assumed the database would be created beneath the folder that I selected, so I choseE:\garmin.
My attempt to then restore the backup failed (see issue 2) and when I looked, everything under E:\garmin had been deleted. Totally! not even to the recycle bin.
This included all my installed maps and tracks from the 60CSx.
Please change the program to make sure the user creates/selects an empty folder for the new database.
Issue 2:
The "restore" to the new database fails far more often than it succeeds. I cannot for the life of me determine the conditions that change between it working and not.
Among the various reasons given by the software for failure to restore are:
- "The directory is not empty". This is the most common. The directory was not empty, but its only contents had just been created by basecamp after warning me that it was about to delete everything. What a pity it did not apply the test when I had real data below the directory.
- "Invalid output directory 'E:\Garmin\test2DB\db'", I have no idea what suddenly makes it invalid, as it was the same as before, and the name is correct. The error tends to happen if I reattempt the restore after the first failure.
- "Access to the path X:\Garmin\db1\ is denied". This is rubbish. I had just created the folders, and I own them, with full access. I even recursively applied full access to all users and it still complained.
Both E and X are NTFS partitions on a local hard drive.
