How to use "Don't Alert on Arrival (shaping point)" feature

I am trying to use a way point to only shape my route. On right clicking the way point in a Basecamp route and selecting "Don't Alert on Arrival(shaping point)" .recalculating, then sending to the GPS, the trip app. takes me to the way point as I had not changed anything. I guess my question is: Is this the way this is supposed to work? thanks Vern
  • Not every (or maybe "almost no") device supports this feature; I guess yours doesn't... Which device do you have?

I have a Nuvi 2455 LMT. I am thinking about upgrading anyway and will look on the Garmin site. I think this feature would really be nice. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks Vern
  • I know that the zump 3x0 series works with the shaping point feature, and I've heard that at least certain nüvis do too; can't remember which though.
Maybe the 2455 is compatible and all it needs is a firmware upgrade...
Use Garmin Express or Garmin Webupdater to check (and update when needed) the firmware of your nüvi.

I emailed Garmin and they replied that they do not support this feature on any GPS. They gave no reason but this could be a left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing phenomena or perhaps they ran into a copyright issue. That would explain some older models supporting the feature. Anyway, thanks for your help and insight. For the way I use my Garmin this would be a very nice feature. Vern
  • The 3x0 series are the newest models from the zumo line... Older zumo's don't support it.
Getting answers of helpdesk employees that don't have (much) knowledge of their own products is not uncommon though.

The 3x0 Zumos definitely support this, and some of the newer Nuvis as well. I don't think the 2455 does though.

My GPSmap 62s doesn't alert (audibly) with this feature but, the waypoints still show as the "Next Point" until I pass them.

On emailing Garmin again I received a second note saying that no garmin GPS's support this feature. No explanation is given. It's not a huge problem. You simply can't put your waypoints at an intersection else, you won't know which direction to turn until your it. I have been putting my waypoints that are used for shaping points, just past the intersection. This seems to be working well. Thanks for everyone's input. over and out, Vern
