Firmware vs Owners Manuals

The owners manual for my Oregon 450 does not seem to agree with the menu choices I have on my device. I'm using version 6.20. The Setup Routing description and menu choices are different. Is there or should there be an updated version of the owners manual?

Are you using a hard-copy manual that came with the device or the version that's available (free) on-line at the Garmin website? They may both be wrong, but just wanted to make you aware that manuals for all the devices are available on-line.

    Good luck.

Thanks, I was aware of that. I am using an on line users manual. What I was wondering is whether firmware updates would render the users manual obsolete or out of date. Do users manuals ever get updated? Is there some other reason that the screen on my Oregon shows different choices than the manual envisions?

The manuals (PDF) aren't updated often and sometimes never.

Garmin's manuals have always been pretty basic. If you want to learn about your Oregon 450 in depth go to

BTW the latest Oregon firmware is 6.40.
  • Can you give us a screen shot of something that does not match the manual? The Oregon is very customizable with profiles, dashboards and user preferences. Is it possible you are looking at something you have customized from the default?

This is always a little confusing but try this as a menu. It is different from the manual.
  • You're right. The Setup>Routing selections on my Oregon 550 don't match what the manual says at all. I suspect this was incorrectly carried over from the Oregon 400 series manual.

The options for recalculating routes were first added to the Montana firmware shortly after its release... 2011 I think? Then Garmin also added the same options to the Oregon, GPSMap 62 and other devices, perhaps early 2012 or late 2011? This was all long after the Oregon x50 series was introduced and I'm sure they just didn't want to waste resources in updating old manuals.

The good news is that Garmin gave their old devices some new features in response to user feedback. If you follow any of the popular GPS sites such as GPSReview, GPS Tracklog, Groundspeak, etc. you find out when new features like these are introduced. :)
