Revert back to MapSource ???

I use StreetPilot 2720. Yes I know it is an "Old Brick", but I love some of its features that are not on the newer GPS units. And of course I have use MapSource for a number of years.

I have been trying to use BaseCamp for about 18 months now. I now have version 4.2.2. There a some of the BC features I like. And I know that MapSource is no longer supported.

Today I was trying to copy a number of routes and waypoints from one list to a new list so I could plan a trip (that is create a few routes). This is one feature I like. BC crashed each time I use the Ctrl-down arrow to select the third waypoint I wanted to move. .. ..

Well I went back to MS and planed the routes then saved and imported into BC

My question is How many people who have learned on MapSource have refused to go to BC or have reverted back to MS?

I'm a MS user :) I do use BC but only to display stuff I've already got (i.e. GPX files from a device or from a MS GDB file). I'll continue to do that as long as Garmin's maps work in MS (there are already issues with that in some areas).

I have been trying to convert myself to Basec*amp since it's inception. It still isn't going well. I keep hoping they clean up some of the issues that many (including myself) have posted over the last few years.

So, I use Mapsource, but keep trying things in BC. I just can't make myself like it.
  • I don't find BC an issue, now I never use Mapsource.

I use to use MS but it's been so long ago that I honestly don't remember how it works. I've become a BC convert, is it perfect, no far from it, but it a very good and usable program. I've made several 60+ day trips out West and out East using BC with very few problems. The point is you have to use it to get comfortable with it.

I use Mapsource for the things Basecamp makes harder for me to do or that Basecamp simply can't do at all. That's the majority of the things I need/want to do. So I still consider myself a Mapsource user.

But I use Basecamp for a few things that it does well or that Mapsource can't do at all.

I don't consider it a question of "moving to Basecamp" or "reverting to Mapsource". Garmin has supplied us with two tools and charges us nothing to install and use them. So I just cherry pick what I need from each.

  • i'm a big big fan of basecamp - i think it's a brilliant and powerful software. It power and ease of use could potentially wipeout other 3rd party map software like Ozi etc. The create route/track functionality is so intuitive using BC is like photoshop to photoediting. thanks Garmin - u done right on this - now just fix my mapinstall problem (it crashes when i try to transfer maps to the gps) and life would be perfect again.

+1 You have to forget MS into order to convert. The 2 programs are very different approaches to the same problem. Kind of like Microsoft versus Apple!

I really feel sorry all those who think you have to "give up" one of these programs to use the other.

Well we may have to at some point if Garmin changes their map format again. Of course if you don't use Garmin maps then you're good forever.

MapSource crashes with some Garmin maps in some areas. That makes it unusable (using those maps at least) for some.

I'm quite aware of both those issues. But as long as things I want to do still work I will continue to cherry pick the things that work best for me from each program.
