Basecamp Windows MapSource map woes

I found that wilderness.net has downloadable wilderness boundary maps for Garmins. Problem is, they offer an installer for MapSource on PC's and Basecamp on Macs. Well, I'm a Basecamp user on PC. Any ideas on how I can get these maps into my etrex 20 because I'm not getting it.

i just downloaded and installed the Colorado wilderness map. and it shows up in both Mapsource and Basecamp. U can use mapinstall from garmin to install it on your Etrex 20.

The MapSource installer should also install the maps in BaseCamp (on Windows).

If it works on Mapsource, it should work on Basecamp. The maps are stored in the same place. :)

No. It appears you have a registry based (vs .gmap) map. For those the Windows registry must contain certain "pointers" that MapSource/BaseCamp use to locate the map files. Now on a 32-bit machine such pointers are in the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\FamiliesNT
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products

key(s).

Now on Windows x64 machines 32-bit program registry reads are redirected (by the OS) to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Families
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\FamiliesNT
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Products

This is not normally a problem as a (32-bit) installer setting registry entries will end up (through the OS) writing them to the right place. However installers that use one or more .reg files will not.

In short MapSource/BaseCamp (being 32-bit apps) are not finding the registry entries for your map. As far as they're concerned it doesn't exist.

It is hosted off-site, but the author is a member at GPSFileDepot. If they created the installer with the old template from GPSFileDepot, there is a bug that could prevent the map from appearing on Windows 7/64 bit. If you are running that version of Windows, see this thread about a similar problem and install the MyTrails map as suggested here: http://forums.gpsfiledepot.com/index.php/topic,3483.0.html

If the installer uses .reg files the bug is probably as I described above.

I made the exact same mistake recently when I manually "installed" an old registry based map on my Win7 x64 system. I used a .reg file from another 32-bit system and both MapSource/BaseCamp didn't see the map. After drinking more caffeine and kicking myself I put the registry entries in the right place and my map immediately showed up.
