Custom BaseCamp routes do not show up on Nuvi 550

I created various motorcycle routes using BaseCamp. I then clicked on the route, hit Edit, Send To, then Nuvi 550 Memory Card. It appears to transfer the route, but when I go into the Nuvi, Custom Routes, it says no custom routes exist. I have a 2GB Micro card in the Nuvi. So what am I missing?
  • Is there a way I can turn the Via Points off......or create the route differently?

I don't have a Nuvi, so no guarantees. But as a general rule, when using the Insert tool to rubber-band the route to roads you want it to take, if you put the via point (AKA "shaping point") directly on an intersection of two roads, such a point will not be flagged or announced.

In BaseCamp however this can be a challenge (MUCH discussed on this forum). It helps to zoom in while doing the rubber banding on the target intersection to get as close as possible and maximize your chances. This can be done with the mouse wheel or by switching to the zoom tool and drawing a zoom rectangle around the intersection until you get to the 80 ft zoom level (closest possible). After you zoom, you can switch back to the Insert tool and as soon as you move the pencil it will be ready to click to create the point. To work reliably, the resulting point name in the route properties window must be "road A and road B" or some such. If it doesn't read that way, you can delete it and try again. There are some good video tutorials, start in the "Resources" sticky post in this forum. Others more expert than I can chime in with more suggestions for where good learning material resides.
  • I have a Zumo 660 (route based device) and a Nuvi 2495 (trip based device). My experience with via points being announced on the device is this:

For my Zumo using MapSource: Placing via points on intersections will always avoid via points being flagged and announced.

For my Zumo using BaseCamp: Placing via points on intersections may avoid via points being flagged and announced but quite often it does not work. This was discussed in an earlier thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?40262-BaseCamp-flagging-intersections-on-Zumo-66X

For my Nuvi using BaseCamp: Via points will always be flagged and announced no matter where they are placed. Each segment of the custom route is treated as a separate route. The device transfers automatically from segment to segment but needs a little time to compute the next route segment. Via points on intersections is not a good idea since the device has not decided the way out of the intersection when you reach the intersection. I place via points on straight roads where there is no doubt how to proceed while the device is thinking. I may go 100-200 meter before the next guidance shows up. There is a similar gap in the tracks after the via point. There is one track per via point for the Nuvi. For the Zumo there is one track covering the whole custom route.

Thinking about it, I believe the Nuvi 550 is a fairly old route based device so my comments on via points for the trip based Nuvi 2495 may not be too relevant to the OP but perhaps to others.
