Too Many Via Points (not what you are probably thinking)

I just converted a number of tracks on the Paiute to Routes which I then combined into one route. I now have 1651 via points over 129 miles. Seems a little much Problem is, I can't seem to find a way to filter out the superfluous via points like can be done with tracks. I know I could have limited the number of via points when converting the track to a route but I am new to this and didn't know to do so. Is there a way to filter out the unneeded via points or do I need to start over?
Convert the 1600+ point route into a track. Then convert the track back to a route limiting the number of points. I believe the maximum number of points for a Direct Route is 250, but you should check on this. If I recall correctly, a Direct Route on a device will truncate short of the destination if there are too many points.
All other routes (Driving, Hiking etc.) are limited to 50 points.
