Automatic Update Odd Behavior

I am not ready to automatically upgrade to the latest BC versions all the time, I am still on 4.1.2. (Yes I sincerely appreciate the rest of you experts on this forum finding the bugs first...) So in Options/Software Update, I make sure the Check for Updates Automatically box is NOT checked. Yet on occasion, I will be working along in BC and suddenly it will interrupt me and crash/close completely, and shortly a window will come up saying there is a new version available and press OK to upgrade. I cancel this window and have to reopen BC and start over again with what I was doing, surely losing my train of thought, if not some actual work I was doing, like an extended find.

The latest time was this morning. After it happened, I checked again to ensure that box was still NOT checked, which it wasn't, but then I noticed that below there, where the "check every __ days" is grayed out since I have the box unchecked, it said the last time it checked was at 11:02 this morning, which was when it crashed!

So my question is, if I have the box NOT checked, why is it still checking? And why for heavens sake does the checking process crash the app and interrupt/lose what I'm doing? This is VERY anti-social behavior!

When a crash occurs, we check with our update server if you are running the latest version. If you are not, you are prompted to update regardless if the check for updates box is checked or not.

We do this because bug reports from 4.1.2 are of little use to us.

And let me point out the crash does not occur because of the update check. There was a different crash which in turn caused the update check.

I will admit that there is a bit of inconsistency there, but I don't feel this is too much of a pain. I worry more about fixing the crash than about the update checking when the crash occurs.
  • Ah, okay, I understand, I made a wrong assumption. In this case I did not get an invitation to send a report to Garmin as I usually do in case of a crash (even though I am always a version behind the latest), so that's why I assumed it wasn't a crash of unknown cause. Thanks as usual for the reply.
