The Garmin 1:24K maps that I'm using have shaded relief. Sometimes that makes it difficult to see the contour lines. Is there a way to turn off shaded relief? Are there other topos that can be used with BaseCamp that don't have shaded relief?
As far as I know, there is no way to turn off shaded relief. However, increasing the detail level can help. Try highest if there aren't to many objects on the map (roads, POI etc.).
If you just don't like hillshading, you can use gmaptool to remove it. Just be sure to save a backup copy of the original map in case you want it back later. ;)
Garmin uses a proprietary method for inserting elevation data into a map. Only their products (or products form licensed partners) will have it. If you download free maps from GPSFileDepot (for example) they will not have shaded terrain.
