I've discovered that the set of symbols available in BaseCamp is different from the set available on my Etrex Venture HC. If a symbol is available in BaseCamp but not on the device, is there a way to export it to the device? And vice versa?
Some devices support custom waypoint symbols--that is you can load some number of icons into the unit and use those. I think the Venture HC supports them but I'm not 100% sure. If so you'd use Garmin's xImage program to load them.

I wish it would. There are a several symbols in BC that I like that will not work on my GPSmap 62s. At the least, maybe BC could modify its showing of symbols to match the attached device. I use a few custom symbols but it would be nice if there was a way to send some of those existing symbols to the device as regular symbols or custom symbols.

Yeah. And I've been doing that ever since MapSource 6.5 Beta (and my 76CS at the time) added support for custom symbols in July 2004 or thereabouts (9+ years ago).
Changes made from version 6.3 to 6.5:
Provided the capability for the user to define up to 64 custom waypoint symbols.
Is there an easy way to extract the symbols already provided by BaseCamp as .bmp or .png files so that I can then use ximage to place them on my ETrex Venture HC?
