Feature request: drag/move map with keycombo

Hi,

Since I started using Basecamp I've always wondered why this rather simple feature was not available. When I'm making routes I often zoom in quite a lot, causing me to move the map often. To do this I have to select the mouse tool in the toolbar, move the map, then reselect my previous tool and continue my work. If I have to do this every few seconds, this can get quite frustrating.
I don't remember which software, but I remember a similar mapping tool using the spacebar + mouse drag combo for this. When spacebar was pressed, your cursor would move/drag the map, no matter what tool is selected.
Would something similar be possible in Basecamp (or is this already available and am I completely unaware of this?)
Thanks in advance!
  • The Mac version of BaseCamp has exactly that option, but the Windows version AFAIK not.
You can use the arrow keys to move the map (and the + and - key to zoom in or out)
  • In Windows you can zoom in/out using the scroll wheel on your mouse whichever tool is selected, or the + and - keys, and the arrow keys also move the map :)
  • Your suggestion is a good one, maybe one key-hold for panning and another one for zooming. In the meantime, some convenient map manipulation methods were not documented in the Help the last I looked. For example, alt- + or - zooms in or out 3 steps at a time, and ctrl-arrow key pans the map almost a full screen width in one go regardless of zoom level, which can be very handy. The map movement methods work any time the map pane has "focus", (slight blue edge around map pane) not only when creating a route.

Also note that you can switch between tools without moving the mouse to the toolbar, clicking, etc. by using the single-letter keyboard shortcuts noted in the "tools" menu. I find these very handy to facilitate switching tools while doing routing work. This can be especially handy for zooming in to an intersection if you're not using a mouse with the scroll wheel to zoom, such as on a laptop with a mouse pad.
  • I use Adobe Photoshop a lot and, without a thought, always pressing the space bar to switch the "tool" to a hand!
