Filtering Track Points

I just lost a beloved Track because I played with the Filter Track Points feature and it changed my data without warning me.

Please add a "Save filtered data as..." feature.

After the damage was done, I found this in Help - "NOTE: When you filter track points, the removed points are permanently deleted from the track."

What other features deletes or changes data without warning? Has anyone RTFM to find other instances of this sort of malicious behavior?

Actually you may be able to recover the original data.

BC creates a backup (.bak files) when you change something and then close the program. You may therefore be able to rename the backup files and be back to where you were before the change(s).

Below is an example from my BC database folder.

    7/16/2013 12:02 3,475,882 AllData.gdb
    7/16/2013 12:01 3,475,882 AllData.gdb.bak
    7/16/2013 12:02 38,671 FolderData.gfi
    7/16/2013 12:01 38,671 FolderData.gfi.bak

By deleting (I recommending moving them) AllData.gdb and FolderData.gfi and removing the .bak from the other files you should undo your changes.

You can just use undo the changes (assuming you haven't closed BaseCamp).

Garmin's track filtering has always worked that way. If you want to keep the original data, make a copy first.

Which means using the DUPLICATE function.

Falagar: "Which means using the DUPLICATE function."

Isn't that what the little check box at lower left in the filter track window "Save Original track" is for?

I'm still on V4.1.2, maybe that has changed.

That works, too. I was just worried people might misinterpret the "make a copy first" comment to copy a track (which only copies the reference, not the actual track).

Sadly, I was bit by this "destructive" filter as well. In all my experience with other software programs, "Filter" has never implied delete. I think Garmin should provide at least a pop up warning the user that the "filter" will permanently remove points from their track!

    Thanks

    +1 on this suggestion!
  • Perhaps the programmer felt adding at the bottom a check box to 'Save original track' right next to the OK button might have provided a slight clue
