Why is the "Print..." function restricted?

When you select a route and "Open" it and select the "Print..." function I get the message "Printing is restricted for the current map product. To print, switch to Global Map."

Usually I want to print the "Route Directions" not the map itself. BaseCamp should allow the printing of the other information without annoying the user with this ridiculous lawyer driven copyright garbage requiring us to deselect the map we have effectively purchased the right to use.

The main point here is allow printing of the directions without changing away from their sacred, proprietary, for-their-eyes-only maps.

If Basecamp is loading the maps from the gps unit because you don't have the maps on your PC, this is why.
  • My guess it's a licensing agreement thing with map data providers (e.g. NAVTEQ).

Garmin purchases map data from others and converts it to their (Garmin proprietary) format for their devices/software.

This came up in the forums a long time ago. IIRC, the developers said it was just easier to throw up this message for any map that isn't installed directly on the computer - for the reasons Stuart just listed. But I get the same message even if I access a map I've made myself in this fashion. I guess the philosophy is "better safe than sorry". ;)

  • Yet another reason to install maps on your PC/Mac when updating pre-loaded maps and buy new maps on CD/DVD :)

I gut the same problem, I use basecamp. So, if the answer is to have the latest map installed into Basecamp and not just the Zumo, how do you do that?
  • Well if you have a Lifetime map subscription run GarminMapUpdater again and select "Yes" when asked to re-install maps. On one of the dialogs, at the bottom left, there's an Advanced Options button. Hit that and select, in that dialog, "Install to Computer Only".

Now next time you update maps you select "Install to Device and Computer" so everything is done at once.

I remember the GarminMapUpdater, but I thought (there I go again, thinking) that the "Garmin Express" took its place.. but it seems it only installs directly to the device, not to the PC (or ( haven't figured out how yet)
  • Well you are free to use Garmin Express if you wish. v2.2.14 is supposed to allow you to install maps to a PC/Mac. I gave the "easy solution" :)
  • But I get the same message even if I access a map I've made myself in this fashion. I guess the philosophy is "better safe than sorry". ;)

Most probably BaseCamp have no means to check, if map in device can be printed legally. What is interesting, BaseCamp has no means to check, if map in device can be used legal. In the second case, developers took opposite philosophy ;)

Is everyone missing the main point?

The main point here is allow printing of the directions without changing away from their sacred, proprietary, for-their-eyes-only maps.

BaseCamp should allow unrestricted printing of the directions irrespective of what maps are loaded or what restrictions the maps themselves may have. It would be a simple matter (at least to any programmer worth his salt) to dim-out the selection of any restricted function such as printing the actual map as in case.
