This is horrible

I just upgraded to 4.2.1 of BaseCamp and it is still possibly the worst program for planning a route unless you want to take the specific route it decides. I am trying to recreate a route we took on a trip and without adding several hundred waypoints it takes me on some completely irrational routing. I have played with the settings in different combinations but I just want to tell the software where I want to go. I may be doing something wrong but I don't think so. Even in Google Maps I can drag my route to use an different road and it understands that I want that road. In Base Camp I add a waypoint on that road then at the earliest convenience it takes me off of it. Is there a better way?
  • Which map are you using in Basecamp? If you've installed a City Navigator map and set routing/avoidances correctly it should route as per your GPS. The routing on my Basecamp works fine.

Sometimes you can't do anything to change the avoidances in BaseCamp. For example, I was creating a route I'm going to do on my mountain bike, so naturally I chose "mountain biking" as the type of route. But when the time came for me to put the route onto a "major highway" (in my opinion, it's not, but the map thinks it is), it wouldn't let me do that, because there's no way in the mountain biking profile to turn off the avoidance for major highways. I switch the type to "cycling" and got the route I wanted.
  • And the latest Basecamp allows mixed routes so you can have mountain biking or whatever for one bit and another profile for another. Bear in mind though that the suggested profiles are just that, suggested. If they don't do what you want then you can create custom ones with whatever avoidances/routing options you wish.
