Frustrating!!!! maps changing???

2557LMT, all current updates loaded
When using any of the online mapping services, MapQuest, Google, etc I create a map going exactly where
I want to go, using the roads I want to use, all looks good.
Download to the unit and it apparently thinks it knows where I want to go better than I do.
All of my work creating my map goes wonky, seemingly random changes here and there.
I've tried changing preferences avoidances etc, with little to no help.

This is extremely frustrating!!!! I can draw my maps out on napkins with more success, at least they wont change.

BTW, In case nobody has noticed BaseCamp is essentially useless.

I'm about to throw this thing in the garbage.

If you click on a folder or list under "My Collection", does that activate the tools?

    Yeah, give that a try.

OK, closer, I've actually able to make a route, but a couple issues.

How do I enter defined start and end addresses??

I'm attempting to do an 8 day trip, is there any way to draw one route and then separate it into individual days??
If not, how do I end a route and restart a new one under a different name without simply closing and restarting the program??
Seems like trips would be easier??

As I'm drawing routes I clickity-clickity my way along the roads, more clicks means less lost work when I screw up, but in the mean time I'm creating useless "waypoints".
Is there any way to get rid of these waypoints in the finalized route??

Although I'm making progress, this method is still in incredibly frustrating!! I'm usually the go-to guy that others come to for help, this program is making me out to be a blithering idiot.
The only consolation is the more research I do, the more I find alot of others that have been converted to blithering idiots by this program, to the point of having given up. Most say "Yes, i tried it, gave up."
It really shouldn't be this hard. The only saving grace is that by the time I leave in 2 weeks I will have all the routes memorized and won't need the GPS anyway.

You're moving beyond my BaseCamp knowledge now... I'm not too terribly familiar with nuvis or making trips using BaseCamp. I've only made simple routes between a couple points. I'm more familiar with outdoor handhelds, and I usually use the device to do any routing isues. Maybe an expert like FALAGAR can take a few minutes to educate us on this?

Well at least we've gotten somewhere, thanks for the help.

By the way, I've found that most of the online tutorials and YouTube videos were done using older verison of BC, so "click here" doesn't work real well.

Are there any actual Garmin reps here??

What I'd do is before you create any routes, find your start and end positions using search and create waypoints for those. You can do that by invoking the Find options (Ctrl-Alt-F).

Then, to find addresses e.g., click addresses and enter the city the address is in in the location box. Then enter the actual address you want to search in box all the way up in the top right. Enter the address in the form of XYZ Streetname. Don't include stuff like st, circle, lane, ave, the address finder is picky that way.

Then hit enter. Hopefully the address you were looking for will be found.

Then right-click on the address and choose 'Create waypoint'.

Repeat these steps for important destinations.

Now you can start Trip Planner. That will allow you to plan a trip for several days. Find your waypoints by typing in the name.

That is by no means the most straight-forward way, but it should be easier to follow.

When you don't like the route BaseCamp created for you, you can adjust the route the way that Trailtech described. I wouldn't go overboard with this though. Only create via points where you have to. Most of the time, if you picked the proper profile, BaseCamp should find a pretty good route for you and you shouldn't have to adjust much.

A few. But this is not a customer support forum. We try to help where we can, but if you need more help, contact product support is the way to go.

Uh sure??? I have sent numerous Emails through the contact page, have not received a single response.

And here's a perfect example of why this program is so flippin' frustrating.
Followed your instructions above as closely as possible looking for "850 South Bluff St, St George Utah".
I typed this address in every possible combination of syntax I could come up with and couldn't find it, but I get scads of addresses that have nothing whatsoever to do with my search:

I can type the same address into Google, MapQuest etc etc and the correct result back in 1/2 a second. How hard is it??
I've entered this and other addresses into the program before, they're in the "my collection" on the left side of the screen, yet I can't seem to click to them to make those items WayPoints??

Maybe you could simply make the Nuvi compatible with .gpx files, as it's advertised, and give up on your own version of mapping software??

Again today I have pissed away the better part of 4hrs trying to do something useful with only limited success.
Thankfully I am not alone, everywhere I look I find frustrated Basecamp users.
Here is just one thread from various forums that I have asked for help on:

    Still frustrated..............
  • Shame I can't sit along side you ... you must be doing something really weird to be struggling so much with Basecamp, I can create, amend, extend routes ... and then send them to my nuvi without issue ... although I agree address search still needs some work :)

    And that's just the thing.
I used trip planner to do the first leg of my planned trip, learned more about doing routes manually and managed to do that for the 2nd leg, but then couldn't
make the address search work in order to follow FALAGAR's instructions for making WayPoints. I had intended to set up the waypoints for the 3rd and 4th legs and then go from there, but when I couldn't get the search to work I was up agaist a wall. Trip planner won't work either if you don't have a waypoint and the search doesn't work.
The worst part is that the 850 bluff street address shows up in my collection window, and shows up on the map, but I can't find a way to make it an official WayPoint so I can't use it.

I didn't see anything about this being BETA software, but it sure seems like it......
  • Hmm. I typed in the address exactly the same as your jpg and it immediately gave me the N Bluff and S Bluff addresses in St George, UT no problem. And I'm a blithering idiot. ;) Not sure what you're doing, I'm still on 4.1.2, but I doubt that would make a difference.
