GPS Map 60Cx - Base Camp does not recognize the internal SD Card?

I have a 60Cx with the latest software updates. I recently purchased City Navigator North America NT 2013.3 and downloaded it to an SD card. I also downloaded BaseCamp and have the 4.2.1 update. I have spoken to several Garmin reps and all have indicated that when the SD card is in the unit, BaseCamp will not recognize the CNNA NT 2013.3 map set. I have to remove the SD card , place it in a USB adapter and then put the adapter into a USB port before Base Camp will recognize the map set.

I would like to be able to put routes onto the SD card instead of into internal memory. However, it does not seem as if BaseCamp recognizes the SD card when it's in the unit. In the left navigation pane, in BaseCamp, I see the Library and Devices lists. Under Devices, I see my 60Cx and under the device, I see "Internal Storage" but nothing else.

Do I need to do something special for BaseCamp to recognize the SD card?

TIA, Dave.

Another way is to place your 60Cx into mass-storage mode.

The 60Cx doesn't support doing that.

On the 60Cx/60CSx/76Cx/76CSx you can only use the card for map storage and you can only see it in Windows Explorer etc when the device is in mass-storage mode.
  • U can also try devicemanager. It alows u to make maps visible in Basecamp....

When I have six routes loaded into internal memory, and try to 'navigate' the seventh, I get a route calculation error due to a lack of internal memory.

Sounds like you have complex routes with many via's. You could try simplifying your routes and only use via's when you actually need to (to force a route a particular way).

The 60Cx/60CSx/76Cx/76CSx are older models (about 7 years) and therefore have less memory, CPU power etc than newer ones.

All of my Routes have less than 50 Via Points (most have about 40).

40 is a lot of via's per route! You can't have more that 50 points total for a follow-the-road route or 250 for point-to-point (as the crow flies) routes on a 60Cx.

    Are Tracks the answer?

Perhaps. However remember that a route is a plan (of where you want to go). A track is a record of where you've been.

The 60Cx has a trackback function--that is if you're traveled from A to B (and have recorded a track) you can have it guide you back to A from B. Now you can convert routes to tracks in BaseCamp but to use the trackback function the routes will have to be reversed first.

I've never done this for longish routes so I don't know how that'd work

Also saved (vs the Active Track Log) tracks in the 60Cx can only contain 500 points max. You'll therefore lose detail.

...I'm forcing the Route along dirt/gravel roads...

I don't know what maps you're using but if you have one of Garmin City Navigator products it is intended to take you via paved roads etc. What you can do is to tell the unit (and BaseCamp) to try and avoid highways, interstates and so on so that routing uses smaller roads. That may reduce, dramatically, your need for via's.

Or, am I asking the unit to do too much in (re)calculating distant routes (which includes starting at home [Chicago] which won't happen when I'm on my trip)?

Ahh. I didn't know you were doing that. I assumed (bad idea) that were in GPS simulation mode. Put your 60Cx into GPS simulation mode and then set your current position to the starting point of each route and then simulate them.

EDIT: After a little use of Google, it appears the GPS Simulation Mode is basically using the unit with the GPS turned off. Correct? I had no idea you could still navigate Routes in this manner.

Simulation mode is a more useful that with the GPS off. When you navigate a route in simulation mode the unit will automatically act as though you're moving. If you're following roads it uses the roads speed limit to move at that rate.

To move your start position you first enable simulation mode. You then go to the Satellite page, press MENU, and select "New Location". You set that location, using the map and In/Out (zoom) buttons to the start point of the route you want to simulate. You then navigate the route as normal.

MENU, MENU -> Setup -> System -> GPS = Demo Mode

    Excellent.

On some devices when you simulate a route the unit asks if you want to move to the start point. Unfortunately the 60Cx doesn't do that.

I have the same / similar problem with an eTrex30.

I can see the device in Windows Explorer and in Base Camp, but the Topo maps installed on the device are not visible in Base Camp ...

They don't appear in the drop-down menu, and the View menu only has an item for 'Basic Map Only' ...

This is Base Camp 4.2.2 ...

I am running an older version of Base Camp on another computer (3.2.2) and the Topo maps are visible when I connect the eTrex to that computer ...

    Any suggestions ... ?
