Errors when trying to restore backups

I've used MapSource for several years and I'm trying to use BaseCamp

Using BaseCamp V4.2.1 I created a backup with a unique name
When I try to restore this backup I get an error message

Is there a problem with the backup feature in BaseCamp 4.2.1

Is the file read-only? If it is not, then I'd have to see the backup file to see what's wrong. How big is the file? Can you share it on DropBox or SkyDrive?

Backup works for me, so I don't think this affects everyone.

Out of curiosity why would BC care if a backup file is read-only?

I am not sure actually... But I foolishly assumed the error message in the screenshot has some meaning. I'll dig into the code a bit.

There's a link below with the backup file in my dropbox

I've tried several times to restore this file and always get the error message

The file is not read only. See images below

I created a separate sub-directory (folder) for the database and the backup.

I'm trying to have separate databases for groups of BaseCamp routes so I can keep track of them.
Using MapSource I could control where the files go using standard Windows folders and always knew where my routes were.

The file system in BaseCamp is very confusing.
It should be more user friendly.

I have hundreds of routes and don't want them all in one place.

BaseCamp stores waypoints, routes and track data in the AllData.gdb file. The folder and list names are stored in FolderData.gfi.

BaseCamp is a database (central repository) based application while MapSource is a (separate) file based one.

I guess one could mimic the MapSource file-based model in BaseCamp by never using folders/lists and swapping databases. I just use MapSource :)

I would continue to use MapSource also however I ran into a problem where I was creating a route from Asheville NC to Lexington KY using all back roads (for motorcycling) and there is a section near Greenville TN that crashes Mapsource if I route through there. I'm using City Navigator North America NY 2013.4 maps.
I could route to just south of Greenville and then create a second route north of Greenville some miles and it would work.
When I made the full route with BaseCamp it worked fine.

So I'm trying to get my head into BaseCamp but after using MapSource for many years I find BaseCamp hard to use.
  • Me too when I started, stick with it and you'll be fine. I've still got Mapsource installed but I reckon if I ran it I wouldn't be able to use it any more :)

I could restore that file without a hitch.

I believe the problem is that the backup file is in BaseCamp's data folder.

"Big Lynn" is the folder you picked for your alternate database, right? You shouldn't have anything else in there. The data for BaseCamp is everything in that folder.

We are trying to delete that folder before the backup and that is why it fails.

Move the backup file to anywhere else on your disk, but not in BaseCamp's data folder and the restore should work.

It's pretty much if you mess with the folder where the data is (that's not just the "Database" folder) you are on your own.
