How to transfer just one waypoint to the device

Hi,

I have been using MapSource for years but I'm a newbie to BaseCamp. My problem in short: I have a lot of waypoints in (known to) BaseCamp. I want to pick one of them and transfer it to the GPS device. Instead of that, all waypoints go through the wire, whatever I try.

I have Garmin GPSmap 60CSx connected via USB (grmnusb.sys 2.3.1.0) and BaseCamp 4.2.1. Help of BaseCamp does not work (a website pops up and says "file not found" or something). I've seen an introductory video and it suggests that what I want should work... but it does not.

Here is what I do, step-by-step:

- Connect the device and launch BaseCamp. BaseCamp / GPSmap inner storage shows 275 waypoints and 9 tracks.
- Copy those items to My Collection, export them as a GPX file. Now they are no more needed in the device and I want to remove them.
- I do the deleting directly on the device (clear all tracks, delete all waypoints...) Anyway, I cannot do that via BaseCamp, its menus don't allow me to erase anything in the device "Inner storage".
- After deleting the items, BaseCamp does not seem to know. And I don't see any possibility to "reload" or "refresh" its copy of the device's inner storage (the only method that makes it know is to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable). So I still see all waypoints there, although they are no more in the device.
- Select a list in My Collection. This particular list contains a single waypoint and nothing else.
- Right-click on the waypoint, select "send to...", then select the inner storage of the device.
- All waypoints have been transfered. When I push Find / Waypoints on the device, I see a long list again.

As I was describing the problem now, I found out that the problem with not-refreshing BaseCamp's mirror of the device's inner storage is crucial. When I forced reload by dis- and re-connecting the device to the PC, the problem was gone. Only the selected waypoint was transferred, although there are others in My Collection. So my problem may be reformulated as synchronization between the two storages:

1. Is reconnecting the cable really the only way of letting BaseCamp know that something changed inside the device?
2. Is there a way of performing the change (waypoint removal) through BaseCamp so that it knows about the change?

Thanks,
Dan
  • To remove all Waypoints, tracks and routs from your device:

1 Hookup your device to the PC and start Basecamp
2 click "internal storage" under your device, all data appears in the "internal storage window"
3 select one item than hit CTRL + a (Select all) rightclick on one of the items and hit Delete
4 All items are gone now.

Just add one waypoint to your list?

1 Click on the Libary that contains your waypoints, all waypoints appear in the lower left section of the basecamp window
2 Click the waypoint u want to have in your GPS
3 Drag and drop the waypoint in the "Internal storage" folder on your device

    TaaDaa, your done!

That works with newer models, but it won't work with the 60CSx. With that there's no way of deleting waypoints/routes/tracks from BaseCamp, you have to do it on the device.

I always use drag and drop.

To the OP: I'd be very interested in learning whether dragging the single desired waypoint to the internal storage folder of the device as displayed in BC would result in more than that waypoint being transferred.

I'm trying to do the same with a nuvi 785t. Basecamp 4.2.2 will not let me edit or delete any of my Internal Storage waypoints. How do I edit Internal storage waypoints?

    Thanks
  • Basecamp cannot edit anything on a nuvi, it must be done on the nuvi itself. It's a limitation of the nuvi, not a Basecamp issue.

Thanks for the prompt response. Then, the procedure would be to transfer all waypoints, routes and tracks to My Collection. Edit the waypoints routes and tracks. Delete all waypoints, routes and tracks on nuvi gps. Then transfer the newly edited and non edited waypoints, routes and tracks back to the nuvi Internal storage?

    Thanks again
  • That's how I do it :)

Made more difficult at the moment as any categories in your favourites on the nuvi are lost when you transfer them to Basecamp, even though lists are sent as categories when you send the waypoints/favourites back. At one time it worked both ways which made what you're suggesting far easier.

    (@falagar ... hope you haven't forgotten this :))

Nope, I haven't forgotten about it. But I have no new to report either.

It's also entirely possible we will decouple waypoint categories and lists again. It might be a bit too messy after all.
  • That would be a shame, it's the only thing I miss from Mapsource :)

Would it be terribly rude to cheer?? :)
