Looking for a new GPS that will work with BC

Ok.. I need some advice from you all.

I ordered the RV 760EMT with a 2day shipment from the Garmin Website. (I started a different thread about the RV 760EMT earlier)
Came to find out that the GPS is on back order until the middle of July. This is not acceptable. The place I wanted it delivered, I am only staying at their home until July 7th. So I had to cancel the order. Now I am going to have to go to Best Buy and pick up one I would like some advise.

I have been looking at the Dezel 760. But I don't want to use the truck feature. It routes me to places that are far out of the way. I like the 7" screen, Text to voice, lane change and such. So I was wanting one that has a 7" screen, many of the features that does not run $400.00. I can wait until after July and maybe order the RV 760. I want one that I can upload routes and waypoints from my computer and use the same map that I have on my computer. I have the North American NT 2013.4 map on my compter. Not sure if it is the most recent and if the new GPS will have the same map. I am using an aircard for internet access so downloading a new map could be difficult.

I have a Diesel Pickup and pull a 38ft fifth wheel trailer. Won't be back home near Dallas until Nov. Was planning to go to Canada and wanted to have a GPS so I won't get lost. I am using Basecamp to upload my routes and waypoints so the one I purchase needs to be able to compatible with BC. Are all Nuvi's compatible with BC ??

Thanks for any advice.

  • Well all nuvis are 'compatible with BC' but some may not support features you might want, for example you can't transfer routes to the 30/40/50 series. Also any new GPS may or may not come with 2013.40 map, the latest is 2014.10.

If you want a 7" screen you're really stuck with the ones shown here https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/automotive/7-0-screen/cOnTheRoad-cAutomotive-atFILTER_FEATURE_AUTO7INCHSCREEN_01-p1.html

From what I can see the RV 760LMT isn't released yet. My guess is that's it's the same hardware as the Dezel 760 but with different firmware. Also looking at Garmin's site the RV 760LMT is their only "RV" model.

As for maps CN NA NT 2014.10 is the latest. That said whatever you buy may not have those. Garmin does offer one free map update within 90 days but a LMT model is going to have free lifetime map updates anyway. Now since you already have the 2014.10 map data all you really need is an unlock code for whatever unit you purchase. I don't know if you can start a map update, then cancel it, and still get an unlock code. I've never tried that.

Perhaps you could make do with a cheaper non-RV model for a while (better than nothing?) until the RV 760LMT is available. That could then be put to use in another vehicle.

BTW if you want something that'll support routes (or trips nowadays) make sure you check the specs on Garmin's site and make sure "routes" is > 0. Do NOT assume that all models support routing.

Great advise Stuart. That was part of what I am looking for.

However I got a great surprise phone call from a supervisor with Garmin. I had explained my situation and they offered me a 465t (refurbished) to replace the one that failed at no cost and next day delivery.

Now tell me where else can you get such customer support. So it looks like I will be able to wait until the RV760 comes out for real..

Thank you Garmin.. Thank you to those that responded on this forum, Great place to get help.

On edit... the RV 760 says it supports Routes... Thanks
  • I talked with someone at Garmin and this is what he had to say about a class on the RV 760..

My reaction to the new RV 760 is WOW. They have everything you might want for RV. The Truck restrictions are removed. The physical (height, weight, length are still included) but all the other things about trucking are removed. There is an icon for full RV information like KOA, RV Repair, etc. I think you will be very excited by all the great info… there is even a wireless backup camera that is coming out for the RV 760. Keep an eye out for that.

I am looking forward to getting the RV760 when it comes out...

The dezl 760 supports a variety of different screen layouts through the "dashboards" feature. The 2013 Nuvi models have dropped support for dashboards so I don't know if the RV 760 will be able to do that.

Of course, this might not matter to you but it's yet another one of those subtle differences between models that are hard to wrap your brain around. :D
