What just happened?

I got an update today that said it was ready to install. I assumed the latest BETA was now ready - I did not install the latest BETA when it was first available.

After the update, all my routes had changed, and a lot of really old routes appeared (no longer usable).

I tried to figure out what happened , but I had to restore to the earlier version to get the correct routes back.

What do I need to do?

When you say restore to earlier version, do you mean you manually installed on older version of BaseCamp?

Or did you use the "Restore from previous version" option?

I used the "Restore from previous version". The icons are new and I have the RV option I asked about and hoped for, but under HELP, I'm back on 4.2.1

Where did the old deleted stuff come from - I should have saved some of those if I can get them back without everything else messing up.

"Restore from previous version" grabbed whatever data you had in the BaseCamp version you used before you upgraded to 4.1.

So it sounds like you got what you needed?
  • yes I got my data back, but where can I find the deleted routes the upgrade showed before I restored?

I am a bit confused about that part as well.

Do you happen to remember what version you very running before 4.2? Did you by chance run several updates? Like from one really old BC version to a somewhat newer one and then to 4.2.1?

Unfortunately I doubt these routes are recoverable at this point.
  • When the last beta came out I installed it, it was very slow and I uninstalled it.

On 6-25 I opened Basecamp (I use it several times a day) and got the update window and did it. When it was done installing, nothing was in the folder column to the left under "My Collection" and only deleted routes showed up in the area below where routes and POI's are. I travel around the country living in my new RV, and I'm changing routes all the time. I number them to keep the routes in the order of what is coming next. None of the routes that showed up after the update had numbers on them.

Looking back, I would like to keep the routes that I actually drove for future reference. Even through I have deleted them from the list, is Basecamp keeping the route somewhere, because they did show up after the update but are gone after I did the restore option?

BaseCamp will not delete stuff unless you tell it to or if you downgrade versions.

Here is what I believe happened. I apologize if this is a bit confusing.

    1. You were running BaseCamp 4.1.3 (or some other BaseCamp 4.1 version). BaseCamp 4.1 stores its data in %APPDATA%\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database\4.1.
    2. You then installed the Beta (4.2.0.x). It copied all your 4.1 data into a new database at %APPDATA%\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database\4.2.
    3. You made some changes to the data in Beta. Added some stuff. It all went into the 4.2 database.
    4. You decided to uninstall the Beta and go back to 4.1.3. 4.1.3 uses the 4.1 database, all the changes you made in the Beta are not visible.
    5. You upgrade to 4.2.1. You are now seeing the same data you saw in the Beta (the 4.2 database).
    6. You reverted the database to 4.1. That means it blew away the 4.2 database, and copied the 4.1 into 4.2. So now you see in 4.2 what you had in 4.1 before.

Long story short: whatever you saw in 4.2.1 before you reverted is gone.

I'll end with the usual admonition to definitely back up stuff you really care about.
