RV Mode in BaseCamp 4.2.1 Failed

I just tested the RV Mode in BaseCamp 4.2.1 and it failed. I had it plot a route down I-95 from Philadelphia, PA to Richmond, VA. It routed me through the tunnels at Baltimore, MD. All RVs have propane tanks that are NOT allowed in these tunnels.

The same is true for the tunnels into NY City. I did not test them, but who in their right mind would want to drive an RV in NY City?

Does the device route properly in these examples?

    Which map did you use?

My device does not have an RV Mode. The map installed in BaseCamp is City Navigator North America NT 2014.1 which I believe is the latest.

I looked in the BC profile options and there's no setting to avoid tunnels.

There is no need to avoid ALL tunnels. Tunnel restrictions that I know.

    1. RVs not allowed: NY Hudson River Tunnels, both tunnels in Baltimore.
    2. RVs allowed if you shut the propane tank outlet valve: Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
    3. No RV restrictions: PA Turnpike tunnels, Eisenhower Tunnel, Zion Tunnel

You can not make a blanket rule for all tunnels. They have unique regulations.

Well BC (or MapSource for that matter) doesn't have individual avoidance rules for every map feature (road, tunnel etc) so what you're asking for isn't possible.

Now MapSource has a user configurable road/area avoidance feature (by map product) but BC does not. That would allow a user to block out individual tunnels/roads/whatever on a map but you'd have to know about restrictions in advance.

BC has restrictions on certain roads based on truck/RV height and/or weight. It can be programed not to route RVs through certain tunnels. In the truck routing there is a choice on which Hazmats the truck carries which is used in routing. Sounds like the programming to restrict RVs from the NY and Baltimore tunnels would be no big deal.

What might work is to use the truck profile, not the RV profile and note that you are carrying hazardous materials? There are several you can pick.

I realize that might work for this instance, but it would probably make me detour in several other areas. For instance, both Columbus, OH and Indianapolis, IN require any truck with Hazmats to use the bypass but RVs can go through the city.

Not what I expect out of my software. I expect it to be able to route RVs correctly if the claim an "RV Mode".

What happens with the new RV 760 GPS unit? If it does not route arround this RV restriction it is useless.

    In your opinion.

Perhaps you would like to research, document and put into maps every RV restriction for every bridge. tunnel or whatever in North America, Europe, Australasia and every other place Garmin offers map products.
  • Garmin just have released update to dezl 760 with following change: Added support for European tunnel restrictions for hazardous materials.
Maybe the same should be done to BaseCamp?
