Route Time Accuracy

I'm planning a trip from Florida to Michigan. I started with a direct route and then modified the route to keep off interstates and avoid major cities. My new route increased the trip route time by approximately 3.5hrs. From experience, I know that the total time using the direct route is fairly accurate. How accurate can I expect the total time to be (assuming no traffic delays) taking into account small towns with speed limits & traffic lights on the more rural roads?

The algorithm tries to account for smaller roads taking long to travel on.

You can also adjust the average speed the algorithm uses for certain road types (Options/Profiles/Routing).
  • Just to back up what Falagar has said - although the algorithm attempts to adjusts for the type of roads used in a route (and seems to do a good job) it can't take account of traffic, busy town centres etc, so I have learned how to tweak my average speeds to allow for this, depending on how much of my route goes through built up areas. With experience you can be extremely accurate!!! (on a bike ride of 3-4 hours I can regularly get within in 10mins of the initially predicted Arrival time)
  • I am using my 465t to travel fulltime in an RV.. I will take stops to get out and walk around about every 100 miles or so. We will stop to get something to drink or eat (taking it with us) and I normally travel on US or State highways rather than Interstates and Toll roads. I set my average to 45mph and will arrive very close to the time the GPS shows. In some cases it might adjust the time a few minutes either way but we arrive very close to the time first indicated.

As stated above a lot depends on roads and how you drive. BTW I try to keep a steady speed of 65mph, but many of the highways have a 55mph speed limit, especially in the East.
