It is not useless if you have a GPS receiver that does not recalculate the route when it is imported. It would seem that most Nuvis don't offer this feature, but my Zumo 550 does.

Thanks for clearing that up. Looks like I purchased the wrong GPS unit. If I hadn't spent so much money on my 3590LMT I would throw it in the garbage. My 1450 died a few months out of warrantee and they wanted 5 dollars less than a new one to fix it! Thinking I was buying the top of the line I splurged on the 3590LMT

Too bad Garmin can't get their act together when it comes to nuvi's

This is a frustration I share. There are too many variances among the DEVICES and not enough information about how they REALLY differ. I have the same Nuvi as you (and I like it) and I have an eTrex. Both work well for the uses I've pigeon-holed them into (Nuvi, only driving; etrex only hiking or ATVing). They cannot be more different in their interfaces and feature/function lists, and cannot perform well in their "other" roles. Shame really, as I'd love to have been able to retire the eTrex. And I know there are other newer units that also are radically different (Oregon, Zumo, etc).
  • Horses for courses though, they are different because they are used differently. Many (the majority?) of nuvi owners have no interest in an 'off road' GPS, nor do they want to get involved with planning routes on a PC/Mac, whether using Basecamp or any other system. Of those that do some (like me) still prefer one GPS for on road use, and another for off road. The other option is one that does both, eg Montana.

Basecamp unfortunately is stuck in the middle, initially intended to work with handhelds (which I suggest it does well) but now being used by nuvi owners, for which it's not so good mainly to do with the nuvi's architecture rather than Basecamp. My earlier GPS, a Mio Navman, didn't have updateable maps and couldn't interact with a PC in any way whatsoever. We may grumble occasionally, but we've come a long way since then.

True, and don't get me wrong: I like my Nuvi and eTrex. It is just rather frustrating that basic things which SHOULD be simple, just aren't, largely because the various device "developers" seem to work in their own little vacuum; don't communicate with each other or the Basecamp team... Basecamp can't delete waypoints on their top-of-the-line Nuvi. Symbol ICON's don't match between basecamp & devices, waypoints in the Nuvi have "now" as the create-date when viewed in Basecamp, little/no correlation of categories between Nuvi & Basecamp, eTrex can save tracks to SDcard while Nuvi can't, etc etc. If Garmin could come up with a universal/standard "OS" (think iOS for ipods, ipads, iphones, etc) for all their future devices, with a goal of integrating with a desktop software like Basecamp or Mapsource, they'd be able to overcome much of these quirks. Then they could come out with different desktop softwares (if they wanted, and could sell) which are tailored for a given purpose (road-trips, hiking trips, fitness training, coupling tightly with google-earth, etc).

Sorry I had meant ascent not elevation and I have a Montana 600

Since I downloaded the 4.2.1 the properties page on my tracks will no longer display the correct ascent only the difference between the first and last point. I have to go to the graph and manually check the first and last points to get the accumulated ascent between the two.

Well I think many would agree with that approach ... here's hoping :)

First post, still trying to get up to speed with Basecamp on Macbook Pro. I have version 4.1.2, and when I click on check for software updates, it tells me I already have the most current version, no updates available. Thinking v4.2.1 might offer some routing improvements...

Question on routing. Used to MapSource. On BC, when I select the route tool and go about creating a route by tracing the actual route, I find that if I change from the route tool back to any other tool, for example the hand, then go back to work on adding more to the route by continuing on from the last point, I now have two routes. I only want to import one route into my 665 gps, so how do I keep from creating multiple routes, or how do I combine multiple routes into one?
  • Hover over the final point with the insert tool until you see a black circle around the point. Now click and you can extend the route.

To join routes select them in the left hand lower pane, then right click and select Advanced, Join the selected routes.

Also keep in mind for the future to post on the Mac BasrCamp forum, there are differences in the BC versions between Mac and PC, so you're likely to accidentally get PC answers to a Mac question here...
