Update Basecamp maps

I've just bought a Nuvi 2597LM with City Navigator Europe NTU 2013.41 installed. My Basecamp (which I've been using with an older Zumo220) has NT 2010.1 installed. How can I update Basecamp to the later map version so that routes created on Basecamp will be using the newer mapping in the Nuvi?
(Apologies if this has already been covered, a search only brought up results relating to installing newly purchased maps on cd.)
  • When you update the maps on your nuvi download them to the PC as well as your nuvi, that's the simplest way. 2014.10 should be out any day now so that would be a good time to do it. In the meantime Basecamp will read the map off your nuvi if it's connected to your PC.

You CANNOT install/copy maps from from your device (nuvi) to BaseCamp. They MUST be installed. to a PC, as part of the map update process just as SUSSAMB said.

What you can do is copy the contents of your nuvi to a removable drive (USB stick, SD card etc) and leave that in your computer. BC will see that removable drive as your device.
  • Have just tried the above - Basecamp won't recognise the maps on the 2597 when connected. If I connect the satnav then start up BC I get a splash screen saying it cannot load the following areas - List Data File. It then gives me the option of fixing the problem which then re-launches BC updates to BC 4.2.1.0 and fails to recognise the satnav at all!!! Disconnecting the satnav, re-starting BC and the process repeats - re-installs BC which wil then recognise the satnav when it is plugged in (but still with the old maps)
Looks like I'll have to wait and update BC when I update the satnav to 2014.10
Stuartmw - I have a Microsd card in the satnav which BC recognises, it also recognises the satnav so I can't see how copying the maps to a usb stick will let BC recognise them? But I'll try it now!
Thanks for the help so far.
  • Have just tried the above as suggested by Stuartmw and Basecamp still doesn't recognise the newer maps. I'll wait till the next update comes out and see if that cures the problem.

Must be a BC issue on your PC because that procedure works for me and many others.

Try putting them in a folder named Garmin on the card.
  • I'm now somehow seeing the newer version maps on Basecamp (and Mapsource) with or without the usb stick installed. Looking at the "Maps" menu tells me I'm using City Navigator Europe NT2010.1, although I know there are roads now showing which weren't there before (and have only been opened 2-3 years ago). Is this possible?
Plugging in the usb stick and opening BC still results in what looks like BC "re-installing itself and updating Trip Planner", but with no visible change. Removing the stick then results in the same procedure!!! Weird!
Anyhow I seem to be there (wherever there is!) and possibly the next update will clean everything up. Thanks Stuartmw and Susamp for your help (and patience!)
  • Well I'd be surprised if new roads on showing on an old map. If 2010.10 is showing then that's what you'll have. Do you see any other maps listed in the drop down box? Or in the Maps button on the toolbar?

If the latest map is properly installed on the USB stick then there will be quite a delay while Basecamp indexes the map, but you should see the USB stick listed in the top left hand pane with a progress bar showing how the indexing is progressing.
  • Forgot I had downloaded Openstreetmap a while ago when using Mapsource and this is where BC is seeing the later maps! The usb stick is indexing ok but maps still aren't being seen on it, not sure where it's going wrong. Will format the usb and try again.
  • Sussamp - I've just deleted BC (Beta version 4.2.0.4) and downloaded 4.2.1, formatted the usb and started again - and success this time! It will see the new maps from the 2597 (but still will not work from the usb - but I'll continue to play about with that).
    Thanks once again
