Why am I not able to select a section of a map in Basecamp?

Why are you trying to do so? If to send to your GPS then BC is different to MS. Right click your device in BC and select Install Map and follow the wizard.

I had some maps (24K topo) installed and wanted to add some more but the menu offered ''leave as is'', "remove maps" or "full install" and BC already told me i didn't have enough room on my Oregon 450 for a full install. There should be an add feature.

You should be able to add maps. I've always been able to do so. Maybe it's a limitation of the 24k maps?

Thanks for replies but unfortunately they do not answer the point I was trying to make.
For example if I have a map of GB and simply want to use the Northern Ireland map
then I can no longer select that in BC to download to my Etrex legend as it is the one
map I use the most and don't really have need of the GB or Europe map in City
Navigator. Hope this makes sense - the problem is choosing just a selection of a bigger
map. Used to be handy to do in MS!!

And you can do that in Basecamp as I posted above. Connect your GPS, right click the device and select Install maps. That launches MapInstall and you can then select maps or portions of maps to send to your device.

In that case, why don't you just use Mapsource? If the maps are installed on your computer and viewable in Basecamp then they should work in Mapsource, provided that you aren't using a really old version. Download it here if needed: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Choose “Leave as is” then click on “Advanced/Partial Install ...” at the bottom left of the window. This will take you to the maps selection window with your previously installed maps already selected.

You can add map sections with the left mouse button. A single click will add one map section, while holding down the left mouse button and drag to add multiple sections.

You can remove selected sections with the right mouse button. Again, a click removes one section while holding down the right mouse button and dragging will remove multiple sections.

Choosing “Remove” will allow you to start from approximately from scratch. Again, for a partial install of a map product you need to click on “Advanced/Partial Install …”.

BaseCamp does not have a map installation algorithm. Instead, it opens a program called MapInstall. This program can be run separately if you wish. In the previous paragraph, I said “approximately from scratch”. When opened from within BaseCamp, MapInstall may pre-select some maps based on what is stored on your device (either device memory or card memory depending on where you are installing the maps). If you run MapInstall by itself, this does not happen.
