Base Camp is driving me mad!!!

I have been struggling with Base Camp. I have been trying to produce a sensible route for a motorcycle ride of approx 130 miles, using bike orientated roads in the UK. I have tried using the "New Route" tool. I have found that unless I put in a huge number of 'via points' it takes bizarre routes all over the place. After many hours I finally managed to get a sensible route and downloaded it to my Zumo 660. The Zumo found it on it's memory card and asked if I should like to import it - I replied that I did and it then told me that it couldn't because there were too many via point.

This morning I decided to make a simple route using way points and asked Base Camp to create the route using these way points. The result looked as if I had tied the end of a ball of magenta string to cat and then fed it LSD  It was insane and turned a 130 mile ride into hundreds of miles

Eventually I downloaded the way points to the Zumo and set the route on that.

I am very fed up with my Zumo, which I have had for a number of years. The original route software was pretty clunky and not great, but Base Camp seems to be absolutely rubbish  The blue tooth and the speaker in the unit have gone a bit mad as well.

I chose this very expensive unit because I had previously use Garmin marine equipment, which was excellent and well supported. The Zumo 660 was very expensive for what is basically a not very special Sat Nav in a water proof case. My main reason for buying it was the ability to plan routes and because of the very clunky software this has been very disappointing.

Garmin technical support these days seems ill informed and of a massively lower standard than the marine support used to be, where one felt the company actually cared. In my opinion Garmin have become mass market and support doesn't seem to matter, even on the premium products
  • What map do you have installed in Basecamp? I use Basecamp and it routes just fine, with CN EU installed. If you haven't installed any maps and are simply using the basemap that came with Basecamp then I'm not surprised the routing isn't working correctly. Ideally the route on your Zumo and that in Basecamp should be the same.

You didn't give us much info but I'll make some assumptions and try to help you move forward.

I think you may be using the Motorcycle Activity in BaseCamp. If so, try this, set the Route Avoidances the same as they are for Automobile Activity. That should get you a route closer to your expectations.

As for sending the route to the zumo, you need to send the route to the zumo's internal storage (not the µSD Card) or else the zumo will do as you noted - it will recalculate the route based upon the zumo route settings. In addition, ALL of Garmin's current GPSr's have a maximum of 50 via points in a Along-road route.

    Cheers,

How did you do this? If you selected all the waypoints then right clicked on them and selected "Create Route Using Selected Waypoints" then BaseCamp will make a route based on the order of waypoints in the waypoint list. It's an alphabetical list and will unlikely be in the correct order so will make a zig zag mess all over the place. I found the same when making a 7,500km, 25 waypoint route across Australia. However this was expected and it was then just a matter of double clicking the resulting route and shifting the waypoint order up and down the "ladder" to the correct positions.

If making another route I'd prefix the waypoint names with a number sequence. If less than 99 waypoints it would pay to use a leading 0 - for example, 01 Geraldton, 02 Mullewa, 03 Mt Magnet etc. The number prefix would make them read in the correct order for making the route.

Another aspect is to have exactly the same map version in both BaseCamp and the GPS.

If you select the waypoints in the list in the order that you want them in the route, then Basecamp will create the route using this order.

    Cool! Thank you for that.

You mean holding Ctrl key and left clicking on the waypoints in the order you want, then right clicking and selecting create Route? Well, I'll be.......

In all the time I've used BC, I never knew that!!! Should be in the Wiki.....or maybe it is buried in there somewhere.:)

Yes, to my embarrassment, it's actually in the Help instructions :D here:

    Creating a Route Using Waypoints

You can create a route using waypoints in the Library and Devices area.

Click a waypoint in the Library and Devices area. To select multiple items, hold Ctrl on your keyboard, and click the items.
Click File > New > Route using Selected Waypoints.

The route appears as a colored line on the map. You can change the route properties or edit the route.

NOTE: You can also graphicallyplan routes on the map.
  • But not the bit about if you select the waypoints in the order you want them that's how the route will be ordered. A key point that I suspect many didn't know ... hats off to RSTANTON :)
