Oregon 600 route help required

Ok, after spending quite a while adding all my map waypoints to basecamp for a 12hr hike and making sure they were all in the right order as they show in numerical order in the list and not the order they are visited i then press calculate and suddenly my 12hr hike has become a 24hr hike as basecamp wants me to walk back to the nearest road after visiting every waypoint when I know that public footpaths are available. Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation of the GPS and the UK discovery map I have with it.

The GB Discoverer maps only support autorouting along roads.
If you want to make a route off-road, along paths etc, then you need to set BaseCamp and the Oregon to "Direct" routing. That will just give you a straight line between each waypoint.

I don't think so. BaseCamp (and other Garmin software) and devices use whatever routing data, if any, exists in the map you're using. I don't know what the UK Discovery map has in it. Some Garmin maps have routing data for some paths and trails but I doubt any map products have footpath data.

You might try the free topo maps at www.talkytoaster.co.uk ... they route along footpaths etc
