Hiking/Walking Routing

Trying to use Basecamp with my Garmin 450 to plan some UK walking routes but the only routing that seems NOT to return back to the nearest road after every waypoint is Direct Routing; surely hiking / walking shouldn't do this?!? The Direct Routing doesn't seem to give total ascent for a route either - is this correct??

And while I am in full flow - is it obvious where the data (routes etc etc) are stred on PC when they are 'received from device'?? Names routes are not found when i search the hard drive, but lots of simpe numbered routes are....surely names come across too...?

Apologies if missing something(s) simple; I thought I was IT literate but am beginning to have doubts...

For routing, what maps are you using? What maps do you have installed in Basecamp, or on the Garmin device? You can't route along paths unless your maps support this. Most Garmin maps only support on-road routing.

Second, Basecamp uses a database for all of your data. When you import routes, tracks etc, they are all added to this database. This is probably the file AllData.gdb, in the directory %APPDATA%\Garmin\BaseCamp. So you won't find individual routes if you search your hard drive.
BaseCamp does have options for exporting routes etc to separate files if you want.

    Thx for the reply Craig.

I'll start to use the export function - will have a look at this tomorrow.

I have the "Garmin GB Discoverer 50k All" map which I have been trying to use to edit routes bought with credits from Go4awalk.com and for a 26mile charity walk i've planned this weekend.

All's fine with Direct Routing except it wont tell me total ascent...

    Advice appreciated.

The GB Discoverer maps include routing data for roads, but not any paths or tracks. So it will only route along roads.

Not sure about it displaying total ascent. What if you draw a track, instead of a route. Does that give you details for ascent?
Basecamp has a feature to create a track from a route or vice versa, so you can convert between them if necessary.

OK; so Direct Routing it is then.

Yes - track rather than route seems to give that info. Thx.
