Possible to view the map on the GPS on my PC, without the GPS connected?

Hello:

I have the nüvi 255W . . . and I'm running BaseCamp 4.1.2 . . . on Windows 8

When I have the GPS plugged into the computer, I can see detailed info from the map when it's selected . . . City Navigator North America NT 2011.2 . . . (as opposed to the Global Map, which has no detail)

I think that this is the map on the GPS . . . . G:\GARMIN\GMAPPROM.IMG

My question is, if I don't have the GPS plugged into the computer, is it still possible for me to be able to be able to see the detailed info from the map?

Can I move the GMAPPROM.IMG to my computer, and select it through BaseCamp? I don't see that this is possible.

The reason is that I think I'd like to keep my way points on the PC, add new way points there, categorize them, and then send the updated file to the GPS, after I delete my Favorites (way points) from the GPS.

Copy the full contents of your 255w to a USB flash drive. Now connect that to your computer and it will behave exactly as if your nuvi were connected. Unfortunately there is no straightforward way to just copy the map to your computer because it's in the wrong format.

Glad that it worked. As a bonus, now you have good backup of your nuvi in case you ever need it. :)

You need to set your computer folder options to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and uncheck the box for "Hide Protected Operating System Files". You will find the map files in the \.system folder of your Garmin nuvi F: volume.
