Cannot See GB Discoverer Map In Basecamp

Just plugged my Dakota 20 into my PC after a long lay off and I can no longer see my GB Discoverer map in Basecamp.
The map is there on the device and is functioning correctly, I just can't see it or select it from Basecamp.
The drop-down list of maps shows:
Global Map
Trip and Waypoint Manager v5
WW Autoroute Basemap NR

I used to be able to select the GB Discoverer map.

Basecamp is at 4.1.2
Dakota software is at 5.50

Any ideas - have I done something stupid?

Thanks

Does it get listed in the device panel on the left in Basecamp when you plug it in? Also is the computer seeing your device when it is plugged in, might be worth checking the connection and cable and trying a different USB socket. On my 450 when it is plugged in the screen on the Garmin flashes up a choice whether to go into mass storage mode, does yours do the same? Have you changed anything on the computer, installed something or can you restore to an earlier point.

Another thing to do is to make a back up drive.

Get an empty memory stick at least 4 GB and create a directory called Garmin
Copy the 3 files from your map SD card into the Garmin directory on the new memory stick, they are GMAPSUPP.GMA GMAPSUPP.IMG and GMAPSUPP.UNL
Plug in memory stick and Basecamp will load ( or should ) the GB Discovery map.

At least with the memory stick you can continue to work while you try and solve why the map is not loading from the device.

In the meantime some people far more clever than me will no doubt come along with the answer.

    Nothing to be seen anywhere!

In the devices list I see Dakota 20 under which are two folders "Internal Storage" and "WW Autoroute Basemap NR"

I'm sure there used to be another one which was the GB Discoverer map.

In Windows explorer I can see the device but nothing that looks like a GB OS map, yet I can see the OS map when using the device.

Yes the GB discoverer map should be listed under the Dakota. That is odd. How about removing the SD card and re-inserting it?

    Tried that to no avail!

On reflection, I did have a bit of a "tidy up" of my PC a few weeks back and deleted everything I thought I didn't need anymore.
The only software I have on the PC now is Barmin Basecamp and Garmin USB Drivers - am I missing something else that will enable Basecamp to see the GB Discoverer map?
    Thanks

I think this is one for Falagar or Sussamb, I assume you have the latest version of Basecamp? You could try downloading the 4.2 beta and see if that works? There are a few threads with a similar topic if you google them, it might throw up an answer while you are waiting. The problem I had was the opposite, the map loaded in Basecamp but not on the device, Garmin eventually gave me a new device and a map as they could not work out what went wrong! Not bad service from them, might be worth a try opening a ticket with them. Hope you get it sorted out.

When I plug the device in, windows sees the Garmin and the map and you can open up a file box for both and see the files listed, by that I mean the SD card is seen as a drive and is in the list under computer, do you see this as well? If not the problem may not be with Basecamp, have you tried putting the SD card into a card reader then plugging into the PC? Do you have another computer you could try? I think you need to try and rule out things one by one.

I personally think there is something going on with the GB OS maps as you cannot back the files up to another card and use that in your device, but you can copy the 3 files to a memory stick and plug them into a PC and use with Basecamp as mentioned above. So basically you can only back up to the original card which is not much use in reality. I did hear somewhere that attempting to make a copy of the GB original card actually locks out the original when you pop it back into the device, not sure if that is true but I know OS are very protective about their maps.

    cheers

Been playing all afternoon trying to figure out what is going on.

When I connect the Dakota to my PC I see a single drive in Windows Explorer. It has one high level folder called Garmin and below that are sub-folders:

    CustomMaps
    CustomSymbols
    ExtData
    Filters (which has sub-folder Geocache)
GPX (which has sub-folders Archive, Current & Nav)
    Profiles
    Text

However, if I connect my Dakota to another PC, it displays two drives - one as described above and another one (labeled 010C104300) with two highlevel folders:
    EULA
    GARMIN

    EULA appears to be empty.

    GARMIN contains
Folder GPX which contains files Track.gpx, Track1.gpx Waypoints.gpx
    File called GMAPSUPP.GMA
    File called GMAPSUPP.IMG
    File called GMAPSUPP.UNL

I am hoping that this folder is where the Discoverer maps are located and Basecamp won't disply them as it doesn't see the additional drive.

Can anyone confirm my suspicions and suggest why my PC only sees 1 drive when I connect the Dakota? My PC is running XP and was showing the two drives last time I used the Dakota (September last year).

    Thanks

The second drive is a memory card in your Dakota and the files you list are what I would expect to find on a pre-loaded Garmin map card. As for why Basecamp won't see this, I don't know. Sometimes there are issues with cards not being correctly inserted or loose contacts in the card slot.

Do you have an external USB card reader, or an internal card slot on your computer? If so, try placing the card there and see if Basecamp recognizes it.

It sounds like the drive doesn't even show up in Windows explorer. Then BaseCamp for sure won't see it.

Maybe try disconnecting the device, re-installing the Garmin USB drivers, removing and re-inserting the card into the device and re-connecting the device to a different USB port (I am just shooting in the dark here, though).
  • Windows won't assign a drive letter to a drive that has an unrecognized format or is unformatted. That doesn't sound like the case here.

Firstly I'd see if the drive is being recognized at all (i.e. is the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon showing in the taskbar and is there a drive there with no letter?). If so it's possible a drive letter can be manually assigned:

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management -> right click on the drive -> Change Drive Letter...

The same procedure allows you to assign a different driver letter than the default.

Well I finally managed to solve this problem.

It turns out that the "drive" within the Dakota holding the Discoverer maps had chosen to map itself to drive letter J which I had already mapped to a share on my NAS drive. With a bit of "faffing about" I managed to remove the mapping for the NAS drive to letter J, reboot and drive J is now the Discoverer maps which now appear in Basecamp.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.
