Older Waypoints into Newer GPS via Basecamp?

I've had a nüvi 1350T for 4 years and have just bought a nüvi 2797LMT to replace it. I have about 400 waypoints in my 1350 that I want to transfer into the 2797 via Basecamp. Using Mapsource, I attempted to create a current.gpx file to copy over the same file in the 2797's GPX folder, thinking that the waypoints would be accessible in the 2797. I fired it up and found them nowhere.

I know there must be a way to load them onto the new unit and then access them as desired, but ... how? I don't yet have a microSD card in the unit. Is this part of the problem?
  • Mapsource won't work with the newer nuvis unless you set them to Mass Storage mode. You have 4 options (at least):

    1. Use Garmin Express ... it has a function to enable you to transfer favourites, go to Device, Transfer in Express
    2. Use Basecamp, which does work with the newer nuvis. If you connect both GPS to your PC at the same time you should be able to drag/drop the favourites from the 1350 to the 2797.
    3. Switch your 2797 into Mass Storage mode and use Mapsource
    4. Do it manually. Copy the current.gpx from your 1350 to your PC, rename it something else eg temp.gpx, copy that file to the GPX folder in your 2797, when you reboot the temp.gpx is merged with current.gpx and you will then see your favourites. Once that's done go back and delete temp.gpx (you'll also need to do that if you transfer favourites using Express, Basecamp or Mapsource as they work the same way).

That will not work on any Nuvi, including your 1350. The Current.gpx file will always be ignored, it is erased whenever the Nuvi starts and replaced with a current copy of all .gpx data on the Nuvi. As Sussamb said in #4 above, simply change the name to anything BUT current.gpx and this technique will work fine.
