Multiple OSM maps

I have multiple OSM maps from different locations around the USA. I would like to have all of them available in Basecamp at the same time ... is this possible? Whenever I run osm_generic_windows.exe for one location, it uninstalls the maps from the previous location. How can I get multiple OSM maps available in Basecamp?
  • Well they won't all show at the same time but you can certainly install more than one OSM map for Basecamp to use, I have had 5 in the past. But it depends on how you're installing them onto your PC. I don't use the program you do, but separate installers provided by the map makers. This installs them with different names in different folders. I suspect osm_generic_windows.exe doesn't do that

To have more than one map active in BaseCamp at the same time is not currently possible. But it's something that we might add for a future release.

Take a look at the OSM FAQ.
The maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl use a single product ID so installing a second map overwrites the first map. Solution: download the application JaVaWa GMTK and use that to change the product ID of the first map before installing the second map (click on the flag on the top of the page for other languages, like English).
  • if you can get the img file for each area (maybe sending the map to the gps and then getting the file), you might be able to merge them into one img file with this tool http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/gmaptool When you have a merged img file, you can then use the same tool to split it a a set of files for Mapsource/Basecamp, which generates a series of files and a batch file that installs the merged map.

I think another method would be to send all the OSM maps to a USB flash disk in a single file. MapInstall should do this for you (I think) because it will assume the flash disk is a GPS that doesn't support multiple map files. Mapsource will definitely do it. After sending map to the flash drive, I believe you could use JaVaWa's Device Manager program to make the gmapsupp.img file visible to Basecamp.

I haven't tried this, but recall a post from JaVaWa awhile ago where he suggested something similar and thought it was pretty clever. Of course, you will need to have the flash drive mounted on your computer to use this map. http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

  • I don't know if it still works; displaying more than one map at the same time in BaseCamp is considered a bug by Garmin, not a feature... (I'm referring to the cases where the CN map and the basemap showed up simultanously)
  • I don't think the OP wanted them all visible at the same time, just available in Basecamp.
  • To have more than one map active in BaseCamp at the same time is not currently possible. But it's something that we might add for a future release.

Look forward to that. Won't have to change maps when your route passes from one map to another!

Agreed, don't mess about, use GMTK. I have 30 of the OSM maps in BaseCamp. After the install of a OSM map I run JaVaWa GMTK and then go to the Extra menu > Change Map name and ID.

Change the ID number to something other than 2000 and then type in a sensible name for the map - for example:

    " />"> .

It's then easy to load another Open Street Map, change the name and number and continue.

GMTK is extremely useful so it was one to which I gladly donated. Other maps, regardless of source, can also be managed and renamed if the original does not suit. It's also very useful for backing up your maps and for restoring them to another computer.
