I ran the osm_generic_windows.exe file for Israel and it created a directory with nine (9) .img files, as well as a .mdx and a .tdb and a _mdr.img file. When I run Basecamp, it only opens one (1) map. How do I get the other .img files? Or is it even possible to open them?
There are two different types of .img files: ones that reside on a computer and ones residing on a unit. They contain map data (except gmaptz.img which contains timezone data).
First the computer. Garmin has moved away from using .img files and instead maps reside in sub-folders in a .gmap folder. That said many older Garmin map products and many 3rd party still use the .img format. Typically they're all found in one folder and have names like
14403274.img (map data for an individual map tile/segment/chuck) MapProduct.img (top level map data) MapProduct.mdx MapProduct.tdb MapProduct_mdr.img
In short not every .img is a map product but part of it. Thus you'll usually only see "MapProduct" in MapSource/BaseCamp/MapInstall.
On a device: Depending on how you you get maps on your device there are various .img filenames used.
gmapbmap.img (basemap included with a device) gmapprom.img (pre-loaded detailed map--that is one that came with the device) gmapsupp.img (map on a Garmin pre-programmed card, a map downloaded from Garmin, or a map transferred by MapSource/MapInstall)
Most newer model devices allow the user to use their own filenames (instead of gmapsupp.img).
Here's another way to look at it: .img files are "containers". They may hold only one map or they may hold a large collection of them. So it's sort of like receiving a package in an unmarked box. You won't know what's inside until you open it. :)
I believe the answer to your original question is that you are in fact seeing all 9 .img files in basecamp. The fact that the "map" consists of 9 separate files is just a technical detail that really shouldn't be of any concern to an ordinary user.
