Custom Geocaching Symbols on BaseCamp Map

How do I display Symbols such as Multi-Cache or Mystery Icons on the Map?
Is there some standard Icons out there? I'm surprised the Out of the box Base camp doesn't support these Icons as most of there hand-held GPS units obviously do.

thanks

Garmin's GPSr do, but BaseCamp does not. I can not count how many times this feature has been requested.... Perhaps, some day ;-)

It's on the list (in illustrious company). Won't be in 4.2, I apologize, but it's definitely planned.
  • Requested again

This feature was requested by majority of users even in 2009 and still mot available ? Incredible, that's pure Garmin
  • Do you really believe the 'majority' of users of Basecamp wanted this? Or simply a number of geocachers?

I'd love to see any facts to support that statement.

Having said that, and as a geocacher, it would be good, but I can think of many far more important areas that need attention :)

    Hmmm... Since 2009.

    That's five years ago.

    And still nothing.

I know Garmin runs a skeleton crew of coders to produce the BaseCamp software, so I'll cut them some slack.

I mean, it isn't like a One-Man-Show down under has been able to produce a superior geocaching database software solution in that time frame. Or another excellent solution from a One-Man-Show in France.

And we're not even asking for advanced database filtering and manipulation, we're just asking for individual custom icons for each geocache type... Like:

Most Geocaching friendly Garmin GPSr can already display custom geocache symbols (excluding the Monterra), and have been able to do so for quite some time. So, it's not like Garmin doesn't know how to accomplish the task.

I think Garmin is simply not willing.

agreed , what gives.. such a simple request you would have thought?
  • Yap, here too. The whole map is cluttered because the waypoints are all over the place. One cannot really plan with basecamp this way.
I believe the solution of Locus (Android app) should be the way to go here. -> One icon+full name per geocache and its additional points can be turned on or off to be displayed (with their respective icon+name) if needed.
  • A year later, I'd like to resurrect the thread. After following the blog instructions, I have updated my GPSMAP 64s to automatically show an orange '?' icon for Unknown or Puzzle caches. The default dark purple '?' symbol was hard to see against the dark green Birdseye imagery in a forest area.

Very disappointed that I can't do the same thing in BaseCamp. Oh, I can make my '?' symbol a Custom Waypoint Symbol, but I can't get BaseCamp to automatically substitute my custom icon for the built-in symbol like the GPSMAP 64s does.
  • This is currently not possible but we have on our roadmap better symbol support.
