Installing OSM map to Basecamp 4.1.2

Hi,

Can someone give me a quick guide on how to install the OSM 1:50 Look and Feel map to Basecamp?

It is Basecamp 4.1.2 and the map is a zip file from Talkytoaster UK, it is only for use with Basecamp and not my Garmin 450.

Unfortunately the instructions at talkytoaser are a bit scant.

I understand I have to extract the files to somewhere but am not sure where? Windows 8 machine with UAC off.

Thanks for any help.

John.
  • Just unzip the file to a folder then run the Install file that will be in the folder.

Which folder? I tried this earlier unzipping to C/Garmin then ran install...nothing, then created a new folder in Garmin main directory, same thing nothing happens! The files extract but thats all.
  • See this info in the text file that's in the zip file, where it mentions Mapsource it applies equally to Basecamp:

Installing the British-Isles OS50 Map in MapSource:
    ===================================================

In the folder British-Isles+Contours-OS50 there are also files useful for installing the map in MapSource. This is highly risky if you do not know how to handle the registry values used by MapSource to install/uninstall maps. Please do it at your own risk.

    The procedure is:

    1) Move (drag&drop) the whole directory (e.g. British-Isles+Contours-OS50) in to C:\Garmin\ (for example you should have at the end of the drag&drop a C:\Garmin\British-Isles+Contours-OS50\...). WARNING: C:\Garmin\ must exist before you run the script. If you are unsure of what I mean, please don't do it.

    2) Go into the C:\Garmin\British-Isles+Contours-OS50\ and double click the Install.bat file: this will install the needed registry keys that register the map in MapSource. To uninstall, double click the UnInstall.bat file.

    3) Well, if you survive, open MapSource and enjoy the new map.

If still a problem look at the FAQs here http://www.talkytoaster.info/free-uk-maps-faq.htm

    Thanks for your help.

I did see those instructions in the readme, and it turns out this was a Win 8 issue. What I had to do was disable the smartscreen feature of Win 8 then run the install file in administrator mode and now it works.

Win 7 on my other machine is so much nicer.

    Thanks for your reply. Appreciated
