How to join two tracks

I sometimes forget to turn on tracking on my 60CSx until I'm a mile or two into the hike. If it's a track I've saved before, I'd like to be able to snip the segment out of the earlier hike and join it with the one with a missing segment.

According to BaseCamp help I should be able to select the two segments while holding CTRL down, then use Advanced Join. My problem is after getting the two segments on the same map I cannot select them both. After selecting the first segment, selecting the second one unselects the first.

I've read in this forum about the time stamp issue, but don't think that would explain not being able to SELECT the 2 tracks.

What am I missing?

BTW, I'm using version 4.1.2

Both tracks that you want to join need to be in the same List and you select them in the List data pane.

    Cheers,

OK, I tried that without success. At least I think I did. Although I've been using BC for a couple years I'm still confused by terminology and the abstractions used. When you say List data pane, do you mean the pane at the left of the screen? If so, in it there are folders and files. In the case at hand I have a Folder called Chino Hills, and the files in it include one called 20130513.gpx (the one with the missing beginning of the hike) and one called ChinoHillsSegment.gpx. When I select one, with crtl depressed, and the other still holding ctrl, the first is deselected when I select the second.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks for your help.

  • Something seems wrong with your installation, what you describe should work. Maybe try reinstalling BC.

Or something wrong with your Ctrl key? Try using the other Ctrl key. Does it work for other things on your computer, eg selecting multiple files in explorer?
Note you can also use the shift key to select multiple tracks, if they are next to each other in the list.

Do you maybe have a FOLDER called "Chino Hills" and two LISTS called "20130513.gpx" and "ChinoHillsSegment.gpx"? And each of the lists contains a track?

    Try this:

Select My Collection in the left pane.
Go to File > New > List.
Call it Temp. (This will just be a temporary item to keep things clean.)
    Now select the "20130513.gpx" list.
You should see a track in the lower left.
Right-Click that track. Use 'Send To' Pick the 'Temp' list you created earlier.
Repeat for "ChinoHillsSegment.gpx": Select the "ChinoHillsSegment.gpx" track.
You should see a (different) track in the lower left.
Right-Click that track. Use 'Send To' Pick the 'Temp' list you created earlier.
    Pick the Temp list.
You should see two tracks in the lower left.
    Left-Click the first.
    Ctrl-Left-Click the second.
Right-Click on either of the two selected tracks.
    Advanced > Join selected tracks.

You can then send the resulting track to a different list and remove the Temp list.

Note that there are faster ways to achieve what you are trying to do (like drag-and-dropping the tracks), but I tried to make it as easy to follow as possible.

Also note, the top of the left pane contains only your folders and lists, the lower left pane is where you see the actual data. When you import a gpx file, BaseCamp creates a list for you automatically with the name of the file that you imported.

Check out the BaseCamp resources at https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?31299-BaseCamp-Resources, there's some great learning material there.
  • Thanks for the detailed explanation. I finally figured out myself that what I though was meant by "list" was the list of files in the upper left (Library?) pane. So it was the terminology that threw me off.

I would think joining the two track segments should be allowed in the map view. I.e., after putting the two tracks in the same file they both appear in Map, so why not allow multiple selection there, activation the Advanced|Join ?

    Thanks again.
