Hello! My name is Jason. I am a fairly new desktop apps developer here at Garmin, and I would like to introduce everyone to our new Trip Planner feature! Trip Planner is still in Beta, but we were hoping here on our team that we could get some feedback in the hopes of improving what we have created. Please take a moment, download the build, play with the new feature, and give us some feedback right here in this thread. We would look forward to hearing from you!

“Trip Planner” is a new feature that allows you to easily create trip schedules for vacations or business and lets you add points of interest such as hotels, theme parks, places to eat, camp grounds, and anything else that comes with your map.

The BaseCamp 4.2.0.4 build gives you an early preview into Trip Planner. Please let us know how you like it and what you think we can improve.

The build can be found in this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?37158-BaseCamp-4-2-0-4-Beta-is-available

Creating a Trip

You can set fields such as how long your trip is in days or if you know the dates you can enter them. You can also specify how long you wish to travel in a given day, and whether or not this trip will have return legs.

Starting point and Ending point

You can search for just about anything you would like to travel to and from. In the example posted below, we go from one city to another and once trip planner has created your routes, you can enter in the specific locations where you will be traveling from and to.

Viewing your Trip

Once your trip is created you can view your routes!

Editing your Trip

You can move points of interest up and down, you can create new hubs, and you can drag and drop find results into your trip. You can search along the route for points of interest in a given day, and you can also create days and new destinations. Trip planner takes care of the rest! You can even print your trip!

Trip Planner (and other features in BaseCamp) use the map of the device if you select that map. So addresses that come up will exist on the device. However, the points are stored locally to the computer when working with trips and other BaseCamp features, so you will still have to transfer data back to the device before you disconnect.
  • Not sure why you're having such an issue, as you can drag the route around as you need to. Which map are you using in Basecamp? If you've only just loaded it and are using the basemap it may explain some of the problems you're having. You might also find the videos here helpful, the one on routes explains more about 'rubber banding' the route http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/basecamp/

One significant feature that I like in Streets and Trips, that is lacking in Basecamp Trip Planner, is the ability to include Rest Stops at preset intervals. For example on a long trip, I want to include a Rest Stop every 2 hours for a 15 minute duration. The places where we actually stop for a break will not be the same as what S&T calculates, but it does provide a much better estimate of the actual travel time. If we are planning on driving for 10 or 12 hours a day on a trip to Florida, 4-6 rest stops will add 1-1 1/2 hours to the trip, which is significant and will substantially reduce the distance traveled in a day.

You could do that manually if the map you are using includes the rest stops as data. If the map doesn't have rest stops in it's data then there is little BaseCamp can do. If you know where they are, as in what geo position, you could create your own waypoints to take care of this.

    Hi,
I've just used basecamp for the first time and it's cool but has some bugs.
i can't change the name of my trip, i change the words but it keeps going back to the original.

I can't figure out how to change the dates (i've already input the full trip).
When i send to GPS, i can only see Day 1 of the trip on the GPS, why is this?

Basically i am leaving later today and would really love to get it set up 100%.

    Thanks,
    Greg

EDIT: I found that you have to click on the "Day" then rightclick - advanced to get to the dates.
I also realize i can't use 2014 maps without a microSD card so i will pick one up shortly. May that be my issue? Only Day1 is transferring to my GPS (2555LMT), however all of the Waypoints i saved show up in the favourites folder.

I have just found this forum so these subjects may have already been covered in the long discussion. I have been using Trip Planner since it arrived in the scene, it is not perfect but suits me well for long (500 mile+) trips. The addition of shaping points was very useful, when will they put them in he Nuvi's? however in it's old incarnation on the Nuvi's you could specify the profile for each leg of a trip, very nice if you wanted to get from A to B fast then take the "slow" route from B to C, etc. Please can we have that back, I would prefer it in Basecamp.
  • Nuvis from 2013 on will accept shaping points from Basecamp. earlier ones do not. You can also specify different profiles for different legs of a trip. Bring up the route properties, select the point you want to change then select the icon that looks like a clock face on the right hand side and change the profile. Note you have to do this individually for each affected point.

    Sorry, bad terminology.

Thanks, yes Nuvi's accept Shaping Points but I think the only way to get them into a Trip is through Basecamp and I normally do not pack my computer for (it's one of those big old desktop things) a trip!. I did not know about the "profile" modification option but I think I misused "Profile", I want to change "Driving" from Fastest to Shortest for a particular leg.
  • Well in Basecamp just create different custom activity profiles. I drive in France a lot so I have one Driving profile that avoids tolls and one that doesn't. You could set some up so that one is set to fastest route, the other to shortest, and modify your Basecamp routes as necessary.

Unfortunately if you're away from your PC there is no way when you create a trip on your nuvi to make viapoints into 'shaping points', it would be great if you could. You can however select Fastest/Shortest for any particular route/trip on the nuvi.
  • I am going on a trip this summer so I figured I am going to try it out, especially since I now have the latest City Navigator maps with my 3579 Nüvi.

First, I try to set the start point, I type my adress "Vargstigen 9 Gånghester". I get no hit whatever I do. I just search for my city Gånghester which it finds.
Second I set the destination, I search for my Waypoint in Italy and it finds it fine.
Now the interesting thing, I am adding Legoland as a Interest point/Via point. We are going to stay at Legoland for 1 day, so I set the "Stay for" to 24 hours. Arrive time is set by Basecamp to 17:58.
Now, I expect my 24 hour to reflect to the next day, but no.

    I find this function unusable.
