125 sq miles in BirdsEye = 3MB file?

BirdsEye doesn't commission AFAIK its own imagery, it uses what's available. You could check on Google Imagery to see if there is any better resolution there, but it may simply be that 'it is what it is'.

Google Earth has it in good detail. I guess I'm not sure how to grab it from there and put it on the GPS.

I'm not clear how to do that either, but I believe the technique here can be modified http://www.garmin.com/us/products/onthetrail/custommaps#fragment-2 by using the Win7 snipping tool to create a jpeg image and working from there.

But realize that you will be very limited by the custom map format. Most handhelds only allow 100 tiles of 1024x1024 each. If you used aerial imagery at 1 meter/pixel, that would only allow you to cover an area of about 10km x 10km. The Montana allows 400 tiles and evidently the new Oregon 6x0 series also has a higher limit.

If you specifically want to use Google imagery, have a look at GoogleTrail: http://googletrail.codeplex.com/

I haven't used this myself, and am not sure if it still works. Google's TOS specifically forbid using their imagery in any format other than their own web API and they have blocked access to some programs like this.

thai maps

I'm trying to download BirdsEye imagery of a remote area in Thailand (village of Ban Dung) and the areas around it download high res satellite of 125sq miles = 233MB. However this one place only has super low res available, 125sq miles = 3MB. What's the deal? Does BirdsEye not have decent imagery of everything? Why does it work fine just 50 miles to the east or west of this place?

hello, i also am living in thailand and spend most of my time in the jungle around the lake at khao sok. my prob is.... i have great topo maps of the area from 1975.... the map datum i use is india thailand. when i use wgs84, everything is off by about 300m. fine when in the field, map/thai/datum. what i am wondering is when i transfer the info to basecamp do i have to revert to map datum wgs84 to get it right and also on google earth.
