In a quandary regarding BC Activity Profiles and choice of GPS

OK, at a quick glance it might seem as those the subjects in the title field of this post are unrelated. Maybe they are, maybe they're not - hence the quandary.

I've recently taken up cycling again following a long lay-off, am also attempting to learn BC and also have a Garmin 60Csx that I will use on the bike. My other unit, a Zumo 660 is only used when in the cage or riding the motorbike. Inserted in the 60Csx on a card I have a TOPO map of southern Germany which I use when hiking and/or cycling.
Question 1 - what part does choosing the bicycle Activity Profile within BC when using TOPO maps when, unlike road maps, you are unable to route on off-road bridle paths and cross country paths etc. In fact, when planning a route in order to get an exact distance you have to place so many points on the map to follow curves etc that actually seeing the indicated route on the 60Csx is next to impossible as the screen is covered in flags and names of paths etc e.g. Major Trail.
Question 2 - this is easier and is related to Q1 - there appear to be no functional settings either on the 60Csx or within BC to suppress these flags and names etc so that just the purple route line appears. If there is, could someone kindly advise how to achieve this and if it's not possible with this particular unit, is there a Garmin GPS unit that will make this possible? I did have an interest in the Montana until I read a post a while back now saying that the suppression of flags etc was also not possible with this unit.
